Uniting a complication rarely seen in the Seiko collections with a stunning green Urushi lacquer dial inspired by the Kanazawa forests, the new Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi SPB295J1 Limited Edition watch is the latest design to join the Presage Craftsmanship Series.
The Seiko Presage family has no shortage of sub-collections to enjoy. There’s the Cocktail Time models inspired by different cocktails found at the Skybar in Tokyo’s sophisticated Ginza area. We also have the 60’s Style collection which tributes the Seiko Crown Chronograph from 1964, Seiko and Japan’s first ever wristwatch equipped with a stopwatch function, and a personal favourite of ours is the Presage Sharp Edged Series which elects more aggressive architectures with sharp, polished surfaces and breathtaking textured dials. More recently, we welcomed the addition of the Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series which celebrates Japan’s traditional metiers d’art including materials and techniques like Arita porcelain, enamel and Urushi lacquer. It is this latter that features in today’s release, the Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi Limited Edition.
This is the first time the Japanese watch manufacturer has combined the Urushi technique with a forest green colour, and to top it all off, the dial is combined with a rare double retrograde display. Those unfamiliar with the Seiko Urushi lacquer dial, it is made using an extract from the Chinese lacquer tree – or urushi in Japanese. It is crafted by Isshu Tamura in Kanazawa entirely by hand requiring several layers of paint and polish to achieve its beautiful lustre and incredible durability. The green colour chosen for the Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi SPB295J1 Limited Edition was picked specifically to tribute the Kanazawa Forest in summer while the gold accents mimic the warm beams of sunshine as they peek through the trees.
The Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi watch places accents of yellow gold on the central seconds hand and on the hardware for the retrograde date and day of the week displays and on the power reserve indicator. The gold contrasts beautifully to the rich, glossy forest green of the dial and pairs nicely with the remaining white coloured indexes, logos, hands and markers. While the hours, minutes and seconds are placed traditionally at the centre, you’ll find the retrograde day display at 3 o’clock, the date at 6 o’clock and the power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock.
Fuelling the Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi SPB295J1 Limited Edition watch is the Calibre 6R24 automatic winding movement. The movement is decorated with brushed bridges and stripes on the gold-detailed bi-directional turning oscillating rotor which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal glass case back. The Japanese-made movement also delivers 31 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph, a power reserve of 45 hours and a precision rate of +25 to -15 seconds per day.
The rest of the Seiko Presage Kanazawa Urushi watch maintains all the classic elements of other Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series watches. The 40.5mm stainless steel case is adorned with slender lugs, a knurled crown at 3 o’clock and dual-curved sapphire crystal glass treated to a double layer of anti-reflective coating. We’re also welcomed to a 100 metre water resistant rating and a black buffalo leather strap closed by a stainless steel three-fold clasp with push button release.
