Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Gold Watch Review

Last year, Swiss watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier made history at the annual Watches & Wonders event with the launch of the world’s first GMT Rattrapante watch. Engineered from stainless steel and adorned with two superimposed hour hands to indicate local and home time, the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Steel watch is now joined by a second world-first GMT but one in opulent 18ct rose gold. Meet the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Gold watch

If you’ve already read our review of the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Steel watch from last year, you’ll already be familiar with how the new 18ct rose gold model will work. But just in case, here’s a quick break down of what exactly a “GMT Rattrapante” is. The word “rattrapante” takes its name from the French phrase “to catch up” and is usually reserved for chronographs which feature two chronograph seconds hands that allow you to time two events of different lengths simultaneously. For the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante watch however, there is no chronograph in sight but instead two superimposed hour hands: one rhodium-plated gold for the home time and the other in 18ct rose gold for the local time. Once you land in a different time zone, you simply use the pusher at 8 o’clock to jump the rose gold hour hand in one hour increments until it displays the correct time. This way you have two time zones displayed on the one Milano Blue dial. When your international trip is over, you simply press the pusher coaxial to the crown to bring these hands together so only one time zone is displayed.

The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Gold watch is very much like its stainless steel counterpart from last year, electing the same luxury integrated architecture with a 40mm diameter and 10.7mm height. However rather than stainless steel, the case is now engineered from 18 carat rose gold. The precious materials is used for all elements of the case including the iconic knurled bezel, tear-drop lugs, polished pushers and integrated bracelet with folding buckle. The case also ensures a 60 metre water resistance and is topped by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating.

The dial of the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Gold watch is finished in a blue hand-guilloché barleycorn pattern with hand-applied rose gold indices and the three delta-shaped, skeletonised hands for the hours, minutes and GMT. There’s also the familiar oval cartouche with the letters PF at noon in rose gold – a staple of the Tonda PF line. Powering the watch is the automatic winding Calibre PF051 offering a frequency of 21,600vph and a power reserve of 48 hours. The movement has been created in-house by the Swiss watch manufacturer and can be admired through the exhibition case back. You can see Côtes de Genève and perlage decoration and a 22ct rose gold micro-rotor adorned with a guilloche pattern.
