Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour Collection Review

As the entire luxury watch industry goes colour mad, Swiss watchmaker Maurice Lacroix joins in by adding neon highlights to their Aikon Master Grand Date collection. With their off-centred dials, skeletonised apertures and enlarged date windows, the new 50-piece limited edition Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches are available in shades of orange, yellow, blue or green.

The Aikon has been Maurice Lacroix’s flagship watch for several years now, and we’ve witnessed the six claw bezel and integrated case and strap paired with several different displays since its release in 2017. It was originally launched as a time-and-date only quartz watch before later offering automatic movements too. It was more recently offered with choices of GMT and chronograph complication and skeletonised dials. The most significant development of the Aikon however came in 2021 with the launch of the Aikon Master Grand Date watch. This borrowed the unconventional off-centred display of the Masterpiece collection and combined it with the sporty Aikon case. Last year, we saw the design coloured entirely in black with the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Black watch, and while offering a lot of the same spec as this, the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches add brights pops of colour to the strap, off-centred dial and date.

Starting with the case, the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches respect all the distinctive shapes of previous Aikon models with a barrel-shaped 45mm stainless steel case and the signature six-claw bezel. The entirety of the case and bezel, plus the lugs, screw in crown and case back, are treated to a black DLC coating. Most of the case has a matte sandblasted finish while the six claws on the bezel and polished. There’s also a height of 15mm, a water resistance of 100 metres and sapphire crystal glass on both the front and back of the watch, the former treated to anti-reflective coating.

Compared to the full black edition of last year, the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches stand out for the bright splashes of colour on the dial and strap. The main plate of the dial is finished in black while the off-centred Clous de Paris-decorated hour and minutes dial is decorated in a choice of orange, yellow, green or blue. The skeletonised small seconds dial placed right below the hour and minutes matches in the same colour as does the print on the large date window at 10 o’clock. Another small touch of colour is added to the tip of the seconds hand in red. Finally, the most defining feature of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date’s dial is the large aperture between 6 and 9 o’clock which reveals the balance wheel held under an arched skeletonised bridge and its silicon escapement.

As mentioned, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches are joined by a strap in their corresponding dial colour. The strap is rubber and comes integrated into the case for a seamless, sporty look. They also offer the Swiss watchmaker’s EasyChange system so you can swap the colourful rubber strap with another in just seconds. You’ll receive an additional black rubber strap with every order of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watch.

Showcased through the dial and through the exhibition case back is the automatic winding ML331 in-house movement. It delivers off-centred hours, minutes and seconds, a large date window, a frequency of 18,000vph and a healthy 50 hour power reserve. You’ll notice that like the case, much of the movement is finished in black including the black skeletonised sandblasted rotor. The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date Technicolour watches are limited to 50 pieces each and retail at £8,790. They arrive in special colour-matching box made of #tide material, an upcycled ocean plastic.
