Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror x Seconde/Seconde Watch Review

On Halloween, it seems only right to be covering a spook-inspired watch. The Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror watch see’s the Swiss watch manufacturer partner for the second time with seconde/seconde, the alias of Romaric André who has become renowned for customising vintage watches with playful and eccentric imagery. The classical elegance of the Louis Erard Le Petit Seconde watch is whimsically interrupted by a pixelated ectoplasm on the small seconds hand and the ‘Erard’ in the brand’s logo is replaced by ‘Horror’ in a dripping, blood red typeface.

Collectors and admirers of Louis Erard watches will have witnessed their recent gathering of artistic collaborations. Their Le Régulateur and Le Petit Seconde models in particular have hosted names like Alain Silberstein and Eric Giroud, Vianney Halter and Massena LAB. One of their latest was a Louis Erard Le Régulateur watch designed in collaboration with Label Noir, with electric green accents on the dial contrasting vividly against a full black Excellence case. Also, earlier this year, we saw the luxury watch house launch their first Louis Erard x seconde/seconde watch which boasted a whimsical”404 Error” code, as seen on the internet, on an extended minutes hand.

For the second time, Louis Erard joins forces with seconde/seconde to create a 178-limited edition model perfectly suited to the Halloween holiday. The most distinguishing feature of the Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror x Seconde/Seconde watch is the pixelated image of a ghost at 6 o’clock, placed at the centre of the small seconds subsidiary dial. The ghost itself works as the small seconds hand with an ‘S’ depicted on its base to denote seconde/seconde’s signature and to indicate where on the embossed seconds track it aims. It’s in the dark, however, that this pixelated ghoul truly comes to life with the daylight-white glowing luminous green. The small seconds counter itself is recessed and snailed with a diamond-cut zone for touch of traditionalism.

At 12 o’clock, seconde/seconde have also clevery replaced the ‘Erard’ part of the Louis Erard logo with the word ‘Horror’. The transfer is done in anthracite and red, the lettering dripping down as if like real blood. Giving the attention to these two spooky traits, the rest of the dial is fairly straight forward opting for a silver opaline backdrop with a sandblasted finish. The chapter ring that surrounds it is circular brushed and decorated with glossy anthracite indexes and numerals. In contrast, the peripheral minutes track is sandblasted. Lastly, the dial of the Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror watch utilises two large polished and dark grey hands for the hours and minutes, shaped in the signature Louis Erard fir-tree silhouette.

The rest of the Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror x Seconde/Seconde watch follows suit to the rest of the 39mm Le Petite Seconde models in the Excellence collection. The stainless steel case is left perfectly round with a 39mm diameter and a height of 12.25mm equipped with domed sapphire crystal glass with double anti-reflective treatment, a smooth, fixed, unadorned bezel and the hallmark fir-tree decorated crown. We’re also promised a 50 metre water resistant rating and to secure the watch to the wrist, a black grained calfskin leather strap with a blue calfskin leather and a stainless steel pin buckle. The strap is equipped with quick release spring bars so you can effortlessly swap it around for something different without needing a tool.

Turning the Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Horror watch around and you can enjoy a view of the automatic winding movement within. The case back includes a sapphire crystal glass insert partnered beside a limited edition engraving to mark the model’s status out of 178 pieces. The movement in question is the Sellita SW261-1 with a frequency of 28,800vph, a power reserve of 38 hours and a total of 31 jewels. As with most of Louis Erard’s watches, decoration is elaboré grade and includes an open-worked rotor adorned with a black lacquered Louis Erard logo.
