IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black Dial Watch Review

IWC Schaffhausen has added a new black dial colour to their Pilot’s Chronograph 41 collection with the launch of references IW388111 and IW388113. Available on a black calfskin leather strap or a fine-link steel bracelet, the new IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch maintains all the same characteristics as the line-up revealed at Watches & Wonders 2021 but with a traditional matte black dial.

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 collection was unveiled this time two years ago, following on from the brand’s success with a smaller Spitfire Chronograph. In the same way, the Pilot’s Chronograph boasts a more compact finish on the wrist with a durable 41mm diameter engineered from stainless steel. The original line-up debuted the new size in two dial colours, blue and green, but they would shortly introduce several additional colourways into the family. One of these was the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG” Petronas Formula One Team watch which paired the 41mm steel case with a unique black and turquoise accented dial which celebrated as the first official team watch IWC created in the long-standing partnership with the racing team. There has also been the gorgeous IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Bronze watch which joins together a bronze case with a nautical blue dial and gold-coloured hardware.

Next to join the Pilot’s Chronograph 41 collection is this IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch available under references IW388111 and IW388113. The overall DNA matches that of its predecessors with an aviation-inspired silhouette measuring to 41mm in diameter. The case is engineered from stainless steel and set with a smooth fixed bezel, piston-style push pieces and a large screw in crown. The crown is knurled for easy manipulated even while wearing thick gloves and helps assist in a 100 metre water resistant rating.

It is beneath the anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass where the novelty of the new IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 watch appears. The dial is now matte black, joined by large white Arabic numerals and baton indexes and a pair of sword-shaped hands for the hours and minutes. All of this hardware ensures easy legibility with Superluminova coating. The dial is also united with a sleek chronograph seconds hand at the centre and three matching black chronograph counters. The counters are snailed and include a 12 hour totaliser at 9 o’clock, a 30 minutes counter at 12 o’clock and the running seconds at 6 o’clock. The latter showcases the only real pop of colour in the entire design with a bold red hand. Finally, the dial of the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch provides a day and date window at 3 o’clock.

With the launch of the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 watch collection back in 2021, the Schaffhausen-based brand also announced a new movement within their 69000-calibre family. The IWC 69385 automatic winding calibre is the very same that powers the new IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch. It is engineered from a total of 231 components, 33 of which are jewels. There’s also a column wheel mechanism and a bi-directional pawl winding system to ensure a healthy power reserve of 46 hours when fully wound. You can admire the movement include some of its perlage and Côtes de Genève decoration through the case’s sapphire crystal back.

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Black is available on a choice of two straps: reference IW388111 delivers it on a comfortable black calfskin leather band while reference IW388113 opts for a five-row link stainless steel bracelet. Each strap is equipped with IWC’s EasX-CHANGE system, a unique technology that allows you to quickly and easily change the strap or bracelet to another compatible watch band.
