German watch manufacturer Sinn was founded in 1961 and just in time for the Geneva Watch Days 2021 event, they greet their 60th anniversary with the release of the new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition. Named as such for its second time zone bezel, the design is expected to be a popular one with chronograph collectors with a stunning reverse-panda dial at home within the iconic Sinn 103 pilot’s watch.
The Sinn 103 has arguably remained one of the brand’s most popular pilots instruments ever since it was first developed shortly after the brand’s founding in the mid-1960’s. Pictured below is one of these very models, the Sinn 103B, which as you can probably tell is much of the inspiration for the new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition. The historic design was equipped with a manual-winding movement, acrylic glass, a black 60 minute bezel, a black tri-compax dial and vintage-coloured lume. Some of these elements are retained within the new 600-piece limited edition while others are sacked for their contemporary counterpart. Although it’s not a re-edition exactly, we think the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph is a wonderful tribute to the brand’s 60 year heritage.
Starting with the case, the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition sits on the wrist at 41 millimetres in diameter and 17 millimetre in thickness and comes engineered from polished stainless steel. Topping the case is a black ceramic bezel, a new material for the Sinn 103, decorated with 24 hour scale and ratcheted with 12 total positions to represent 12 hours. The bezel is also designed using the brand’s “Captive” technology. Sinn’s Captive bezel is designed to differ greatly from that of conventional snap-in bezels. Instead, the bezel is dependably more robust and is prevents from becoming detached as a result of being caught or knocked.
The case of the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph watch also features sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the interior, a screw-fastened case back and screwable push pieces and crown, a combination promising of a 200 metre water resistance. The case back features a layer of sapphire crystal glass allowing for a glimpse of the automatic winding movement inside. In celebration of the brand’s anniversary, the case back is also engraved with its limited edition status out of 600 pieces and the words ‘1961-2021’ and ‘60 Jahre’.
For us, our favourite feature of the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition is its reverse-panda dial. The main backdrop is electroplated black with a sunray-finish and the three subsidiary dials in an off-white colour Sinn calls “chamois”. It’s also the same white hue of the 24 hour scale on the bezel and the lume used on the syringe shaped hands and rectangular indexes. The subsidiary counters for the small seconds, 12 hours counter and 30 minutes counter are snailed and detailed with black hardware.
The movement responsible for powering the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph watch is the SW 510 automatic winding movement with 27 bearing jewels, 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour and a power reserve of 58 hours. The self-winding mechanism also guarantees to be anti-magnetic as per DIN 8309 standards. The design also features one of the brand’s most coveted technologies, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, which allows for enhanced functional reliability and freedom from fogging.
Completing the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition is a choice of two straps. Our easy favourite is the dark green wild boar leather strap which perfectly complements the monochromatic dial. The second is a more classic black cowhide leather strap with alligator embossing. Both are secured by stainless steel pin buckles.
