Known for his iconic fedora, whip-cracking prowess, and insatiable thirst for adventure, Indiana Jones has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions since his debut on the big screen in 1981. Now over four decades later, the franchise is coming to an end with the fifth and final chapter, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, releasing this month. Hamilton, masters of movie watches, are unsurprisingly involved in the final film and have created a Hamilton American Classic Boulton watch to be worn on the wrist of Harrison Ford in the movie.
When it comes to watches in the world of cinema, there’s only one luxury watch brand that can claim more titles than any other: Hamilton. With a rich history dating back to 1892, Hamilton has established itself as a distinguished watchmaker known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs. But it is the brand’s remarkable involvement in the realm of filmmaking that sets it apart. The first Hamilton watch to make it onto the big screen was a Hamilton Flintridge worn in the 1932 Marlene Dietrich movie Shanghai Express. Other notable designs include the Hamilton Ventura worn by Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii and Will Smith in Men in Black as well as the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph relied on by Matthew McConaughey’s character in Interstellar.
When it comes to Hamilton’s commitment to the film industry, we could go on and on. But it’s safe to say the Swiss watchmaker knows what they’re doing when it comes to designing a watch for an iconic character. It’s proven once again with their latest creation for the new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny movie. To create the design, Hamilton has worked closely with Ben Wilkinson from the prop team to ensure the watch worn on Indy’s wrist will effortlessly blend in with the rest of his costume and the time period the film is set in. In the end, Hamilton fell upon the American Classic Boulton watch which with it’s Art Deco-inspired, gold-plated, cushion-shaped case fits in rather nicely beside his fedora and whip.
Fitting for the movie’s time period, the Hamilton Boulton watch has been found in the brand’s portfolio since the 1940’s but has been more recently reintroduced as part of their American Classic collection for modern-day dress watch wearers. The new Hamilton American Classic Boulton watch really does tick all the boxes as a formal occasion timepiece, seamlessly sliding under the cuff of a shirt with its thickness of only 7.8mm. Further dimensions include a 27mm width and 31.6mm height with the oblong-shaped case engineered from stainless steel and almost entirely coated in a yellow gold PVD plating. Yellow gold adorns the bezel, lugs and knurled crown leaving only the closed case back bare.
Matching with its gold-plated case, the dial of the Hamilton American Classic Boulton watch decorates its crisp silvery white base with yellow gold hardware. The display presents the classic hours and minutes at the centre with slender yellow gold hands while the small seconds is placed within its own separate subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock. The additional counter is snailed and outlined in a black printed railway track to match with the large black printed minutes track around the dial’s circumference. The dial is protected beneath sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and maintains a 30 metre water resistance.
Completing the exterior of the Hamilton American Classic Boulton watch is a relaxed brown calfskin leather strap with matching brown stitching and a yellow gold PVD plated, stainless steel pin buckle. Powering the design from inside is a Swiss Made quartz movement, and while an automatic movement would have been nice, it does help keep the retail price fairly low at £675.
