Hands-on with the Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts Watches

To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Seiko 5 Sports collection, the Japanese watchmaker has collaborated with Peanuts, the famous comic strip written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz to launch two limited edition Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts watches. Both references SRPK25K1 and SRPK27K1 showcase Snoopy on the dial in two different playful scenarios.

The Peanuts comic strip, created by Charles M. Schulz, is one of the most iconic and beloved comic strips in American history. It ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, revolving around a group of young children, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks. The central character of Peanuts is Charlie Brown, a lovable and perpetually unlucky boy, and his faithful beagle, Snoopy, arguably the most recognisable character in the entire strip. For the new Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts watches, it is Snoopy that takes centre stage on the duo of dials and case backs, showcasing his playful personality with a surfboard or parachute.

The Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Surfboard’ SRPK25K1 Watch

The first release in the new Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts collection is reference SRPK25K1 which takes its base from the recently released 5 Sports SKX series. It has a 38mm stainless steel case topped by a dive-worthy unidirectional rotating bezel with a black aluminium insert. The numerals on the bezel are done in the recognisable “Schulz” font in a light grey colour. The case also features Hardlex crystal and a screw in crown at 4 o’clock warranting a 100 metre water resistant rating.

It is on the dial of the Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Surfboard’ SRPK25K1 watch where the collaboration is most clear. The crisp white dial features a reproduction of a 1963 drawing by Schulz, with Snoopy partially hiding behind a surfboard. The surfboard features the Seiko 5 Sports name in the “Schulz” font. Snoopy can also be found on the screwed down case back surfing waves on the surfboard. The dial also presents silver-toned markers and hands and a day and date window at 3 o’clock powered by the Calibre 4R36 with a 41-hour power reserve. Completing this Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Surfboard’ watch is a casual nylon strap striped in grey and white.

Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Parachute’ SRPK25K1 Watch

The second and final Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts watch is reference SRPK25K1 which steps away from the diver’s aesthetic and takes its base from the 5 Sports Flieger watches. The stainless steel case measures to 36.4mm in diameter and has a smooth fixed bezel, a classically positioned screw in crown at 3 o’clock and a comfortable dark brown leather strap. The case is fully brushed and like its ‘Surfboard’ counterpart comes with Hardlex crystal glass, a 100 metre water resistant rating and the automatic winding Calibre 4R36 movement with a 41 hour power reserve.

The dial of the Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Parachute SRPK25K1 watch is also finished in matte white but displays the numerals on a military-inspired minutes track in the iconic “Schulz” font. The black numerals pair with black syringe-shaped hands for the hours and minutes with luminous coating and a sleek seconds hand with a white lollipop counterweight and yellow tip. On the left hand side of the dial is an illustration of Snoopy flying through the air with his helicopter ears with the words “chop, chop, chop” decorated beneath. This matches with a second illustration of Snoopy with a parachute on the case back.

The Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Surfboard’ SRPK25K1 watch retails at £350 and is a limited edition 8,500 pieces while the Seiko 5 Sports X Peanuts ‘Parachute SRPK25K1 watch retails at £330 and is limited to 6,500 pieces.
