Hands-on with the Louis Moinet Time to Race Watches

Sporty, sophisticated and completely unique to their wearer, the new Louis Moinet Time to Race watches hark back to the traditions of the racetrack during the 1960’s with each “lucky number” appearing alongside its dedicated colour code: Rosso Corsa, Racing Green or French blue.

Hard as it might be to imagine now but during the 1960’s, race cars around the world weren’t oversaturated with sponsorship logos and advertising slogan but instead significantly more subdued and painted according to the nation for which they hailed from. Three key examples was British Racing Green for Britain, Bleu de France, otherwise blue for France, and Rossa Corsa which was a bold shade of red for Italy. In honour of this tradition, Swiss watch manufacturer Louis Moinet has launched three special edition chronographs dressed in these very colours.

On top of the three colour choices, each Louis Moinet Time to Race watch can then be personalised with a one or two-digit “lucky number” which will appear loud and proud at the front of the dial where the off-centre hours and minutes lies. This number will be completely bespoke to its owner and the colourway chosen. For example, let’s say your lucky number is 17 and you want enjoy the Ferrari red shade of the Rossa Corsa model. No other luxury watch collector can have that number and colour together. They can have other numbers in the red design or the number 17 in British Racing Green and Bleu de France.

The different colours for each nation are demonstrated largely across the rubber strap as well more subtly along the tachymeter scale placed on the inner bezel and the hands for the chronograph complications and small seconds. Placed beneath box-shaped sapphire crystal glass, the dials of the Louis Moinet Time to Race watches also reveal a rhodium-plated outer ring with matching rhodium-plated hands set with white Superluminova, smoky-coloured subsidiary counters and the off-centre dial for the hours and minutes in pure white detailed with large black numbers of your choosing.

Also, centre stage is a woven carbon fibre main plate which secures the intricate components of the chronograph movement to the forefront of the watch. The movement in question is the Calibre LM96 automatic winding movement, a single-pusher column-wheel chronograph mechanism engineered from a remarkable 311 components. Alongside a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 48 hours, the movement delivers all the classic Swiss decorations we’d expect from a Louis Moinet movement. There’s Clous de Paris hobnail patterns, Fleur de Lys engraving, circular satin-finished gear trains and diamond-polished sinks.

As for the case of each Louis Moinet Time to Race watch, the 40.7mm diameter is engineered wholly from grade 5 titanium with a combination of polished and satin-brushed finishings. Since titanium is famously light, the case weighs only 18 grams on the wrist and secures effortlessly to the skin by seamless curves, open-worked lugs and a rubber strap. The rubber straps are closed by triple-blade folding clasps with a fine adjustment system for easy correction on the go. The Louis Moinet Time to Race watches are also water resistant to 50 metres.
