The Arnold & Son Nebula watch collection was launched in 2016, upholding the Swiss watch brand’s reputation for haute horlogerie. With not a traditional dial in sight, the series places a skeletonised movement at the centre of a perfectly round case and takes its name from the giant clouds of dust and gases seen in space, otherwise known as a nebula. While not all nebulas are symmetrical, Arnold & Son presents its design as so, with the hand-wound Calibre A&S5201 placed in the middle with seven bridges bursting from the centre as if like a real star. The bridges then hold in place twin barrels to mirror the second’s dial ring and the balance wheel. The overall finish is breathtaking and perfectly embodies Arnold & Son’s mastery.
Both the Arnold & Son Nebula 41.5 and 38 Gold Limited Edition watches appear exactly the same in their specifications, varying only for their dimensions. The dials showcase the familiar three-dimensional, highly skeletonised movement with the openwork triangular-shaped bridges in rose gold placed along the outer edge, uniting the movement and the case together. Below the bridges is an anthracite NAC treated mainplate set with sunray-brushed barrel covers and ‘Rayons de la Gloire’ guilloché. There’s also a grey chapter ring around the dials’ periphery adorned with a white printed minutes track and arrow-shaped hour markers in rose gold. At the centre, two faceted, rose gold syringe hands display the hours and minutes while a small seconds counter sits at the 7 o’clock position. The latter is mounted to the end of the bridge at this location and displays the seconds with another rose gold hand.
As with the Arnold & Son Nebula watches before it, the new Nebula 41.5 and 38 Gold watches display the brand’s Calibre A&S5201 centre stage. It has been entirely developed, manufactured, assembled and adjusted at the Swiss brand’s facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds and boasts a manual-wind mechanism, 24 jewels, a frequency of 21,600vph and a power reserve of 90 hours. Since the Calibre A&S5201 is a remarkably thin movement, at only 4.18mm tall, the cases of the Arnold & Son Nebula 41.5 and 38 Gold Limited Edition watches sit beautifully slim on the wrist. Both cases are only 8.73mm high crafted from luxurious 18 carat rose gold with polished and brushed finishing. The bezel is kept slim to give more room for displaying the movement while a non-screw locked, knurled crown sits at 3 o’clock offering a 30 metre water resistance. You’ll also get sapphire crystal glass on both the front and back, the former electing anti-reflective coating, and sturdy yet slender lugs for curling the grey, hand-stitching alligator leather strap around your wrist. The strap is closed by an 18ct rose gold pin buckle.
