Hands-on with the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green Watch

Reinvented with a dark green dial and strap, the new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage watch retains its coveted vintage charm by bringing its modernised architecture together with aesthetics modelled after the Alpina 10 Seastrong, the brand’s very first Super Compressor.

It’s safe to say that the trend for vintage-inspired watches is still strong and holding. Alpina is one of many brands that has chosen sensibly in this region, calling to all those collectors – us included- that struggle to say no to a retro timepiece. The story of the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green watch that we’re looking at today began in 1969 when the Swiss watch manufacturer introduced its landmark divers watch, the Alpina Diver 10 Seastrong. Equipped with an automatic winding movement and a super-compressor case constructed by the case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA), the design was largely defined by its two crowns, one of which was used to control the internal rotating 60 minute scale bezel. In 2016, Alpina then presented its Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage collection, a modernised version of the original super-compressor models with the same internal bezel and two crowns.

The latest piece in the brand’s vintage divers watch collection is the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green watch. Despite it not having a super-compressor case, it boasts the look of one to reinforce its vintage look. It sits on the wrist at 42mm in diameter and with a thickness of 12.30mm, so not overly large but imposing enough for it to feel solid and secure on the wrist. The case is engineered from 316L grade stainless steel to match the lugs and the external fixed bezel, both of which come with a combination of brushed and polished finishing.

The case of the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green watch also presents two crowns, one at 4 o’clock to set the time and wind the movement and one at 2 o’clock to adjust the internal rotating bezel. The latter crown is nicely detailed with a grid pattern to evoke the same found on early super compressor cases. Both are screw-in and alongside the decorated screwed down case back, we are warranted a 300 metre water resistance. Completing the case’s vintage appeal is tall box-shaped sapphire crystal grass treated to a layer of anti-reflective coating.

Beneath the glass is where the dial and internal rotating bezel lies. The bezel is finished in black and marked by elongated markers, Arabic numerals at the 15, 30 and 45 positions and a triangle motif for the 60 position. The dial extends from the sloped bezel in the same sunray brushed finish but in a new dark green shade. It is also decorated with applied silver-coloured hour markers and matching central hands for hours, minutes and seconds. The hands ensure additional legibility with inserts of Superluminova across their length, or in the case of the seconds hand, just on the tip. The dial of the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green watch is effortlessly clean and simple, assisted by the lack of any date complication.

Powering the time-only dial of the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage Green watch is the Calibre AL-520, an automatic winding movement based on the Sellita SW200-1. Alongside a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and 26 jewels, we’re promised a healthy power reserve of 38 hours. Completing the green aesthetic of the new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Heritage watch is a green rubber strap detailed with a nice supple texture and closed by a classic stainless steel pin buckle.
