Every year, Certina marks their support of sea turtle protection and ocean -sustainability with a “STC” watch created in partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy. This year, the annual special edition elects a vintage aesthetic partnered with a royal blue palette, a recycled plastic strap and all the high-performance dive specs of the Super PH500M collection. Meet the new Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy watch for 2022…
The famous turtle shell logo found on every Certina watch has long been recognised as a symbol for robustness and longevity, but their relationship to marine life goes much further than this. Certina joined forces with the Sea Turtle Conservancy and its Tour de Turtles migration-tracking project in 2017 and has since been supporting the charity’s efforts in conservation, awareness, and education. The Florida-based organisation has been working to protect since turtles since 1959, creating research programmes and educational campaigns to improve the existence of these endangered animals. With this in mind, a portion of the proceeds from sales of the new Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy watch, just like all those before it, will go to benefit the STC and its important work.
Now onto the 2022 Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy watch itself. The design sticks to the specs of the original DS Super PH500M collection, taking inspiration from a 1960’s Certina watch once used in the Tekite I programme. The study saw aquanauts live in an underwater habitat for extended periods of time to study the consequence of closed environments on human biology and psychology. Four scientists in the programme wore a 1968 Certina DS-2 Super PH200M watch which today is revived for the modern wrist in the 2022 Certina DS Super PH500M collection.
The case of the new Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy watch embodies its retro predecessor with a familiar architecture. The 43mm case is engineered from classic stainless steel and features a height of 14.95mm while the 14-sided unidirectional rotating bezel comes fitted with a nautical blue aluminium insert. A white printed 60 minute scale adorns the bezel alongside a luminous marker for the easy tracking of elapsed dive times. As you’d expect from a watch in this collection, the case is reinforced with the brand’s DS technology which equips the case and movement with an O-ring for improved shock resistance. As a high-performance diving instrument, the case also delivers a screw in crown and case back orchestrated to ISO 6425 diver’s watch standards for a water resistant rating of 500 metres.
Housed beneath domed sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective treatment is a bold blue sunray dial to pair in nicely with the matching blue bezel. The centrepiece of the Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy 2022 watch ensures optimal legibility in all conditions with rectangular-shaped hour markers, sword-shaped hour and minute hands and an arrow-tipped central seconds hand all treated to glow in the dark Superluminova inserts. The minutes hand stands out convincingly for its contrasting orange decoration which matches with the orange lettering for “DS” at 6 o’clock. The dial also presents a date aperture at 3 o’clock.
Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date is the automatic winding Powermatic 80 calibre, the Swatch Group’s go-to movement renowned for its extended 80 hour power reserve and Nivachron balance spring for improved anti-magnetism. We’re also warranted 23 jewels and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Finishing off the Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy watch is a new strap, contributing to the sustainability efforts of the Swiss watch manufacturer. It is engineered by #tide (the same company which collaborated with Maurice Lacroix on their Aikon Tide collection), who takes plastics from the ocean and recycles them into useable goods like the watch box and organic cotton strap of the Certina DS Super PH500M Sea Turtle Conservancy 2022 watch.
