Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 Edition Watch Review

Swiss watchmaker Breitling and Australian lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina are back together, launching their second Breitling Top Time Deus Chronograph. The 2021 limited edition was a quick sell-out, beautifully tributing Breitling’s 1960’s Top Time watch with a bi-compax chronograph dial in silver and black with fiery orange accents. The new Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watch delivers the same layout but with a new creamy white and sky blue colourway.

Back in the 1960’s, Breitling set themselves a task to create a stylish, youthful timepiece for young and active professionals. So, the Breitling Top Time was revealed, offering modern proportions, graphic dials and a masculine elegance just as much suited to men as women. Other designs in Breitling’s portfolio were set at a higher price, like the flagship Navitimer or Chronomat, while the Breitling Top Time remained a perfect entry level chronograph for young watch aficionados.  It wasn’t long before the Top Time became a classic and found itself at the centre of pop culture as Sean Connery famously wore a Breitling Top Time watch as James Bond in the 1965 film Thunderball. Breitling ended production of the collection two decades after its original release until 2020, when they revived Ref.2003 with the Breitling Premier Top Time Re-edition. A year later, Breitling announced their new partnership with Australian custom motorcycle and surf outfitter Deus Ex Machina to launch the 2021 Top Time Deus chronograph. Just as it was during the 1960’s, the design was a fast favourite with an in-crowd of café racer and sports car enthusiasts.

So that brings us to the Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watch. Its distinguishing feature is the dial which is now white lacquered and adorned in gorgeous sky blue on the subsidiary dials and speed-measuring tachymeter scale. There’s still the same bright red and orange markings on the highest speeds on the tachymeter scale and an orange chronograph seconds hand shaped like a lightning bolt in honour of Deus Ex Machina. The two sky blue counters at 3 and 9 o’clock are slightly sunken, the 60 seconds subsidiary dial on the left set with an orange hand and the 30 minute chronograph counter on the right tracked by a red hand. The baton hour markers and two slim hour and minute hands are adorned in vintage-coloured Superluminova. The dial of the Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watch is completed by the pair’s logos with the Breitling emblem up top in its original retro font and the Deus logo at 6 o’clock.

Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling, says, “Top Time Deus is a watch that’s easy-going, rugged, and stylish at the same time, just like the person it’s made for. The modern-retro look beautifully complements the way Deus styles its boards and bikes.”

The case of the Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watch mirrors that of the 2021 edition with its statement mushroom chronograph pushers, knurled crown and case back engraved with a Deus bike and rider designed by Deus creative director Carby Tuckwell. The snapped case back is also marked with the “One of 2000” limitation. The case is engineered entirely from polished stainless steel with a pleasing 41mm diameter and 14.27mm height. The bezel is left fixed and polished sitting beside convex sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. There’s also a 30 metre water resistant rating and a handsome racing-style brown calfskin leather strap with perforated detailing, white stitching and a steel folding clasp.

Powering the Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watch is the Breitling Calibre 23, the very same Swiss made movement that powered its predecessor. As with all Breitling movements, the Breitling 23 is chronometer certified and delivers a healthy 48 hour power reserve, 27 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph. With every order of one of the 2,000 limited edition Breitling Top Time Deus 2023 watches, you’ll also receive a co-branded waxed-canvas travel tote.
