Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold Limited Edition Watch Review

Aesthetically, there are two key elements that help make a luxury watch look “luxury”. A solid gold case and a skeletonised dial. The new Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold watch delivers exactly that with a breathtaking open-work dial and a 155 gram 18 carat rose gold case in a limited edition run of only 99 pieces.

On its launch in 2019, the Bell & Ross BR 05 collection diversified the brand’s portfolio of pilot watches to include a more urban and contemporary style which many refer to as the archetype “luxury sports watch”. Featuring integrated bracelets and the iconic “square-within-a-circle” case, the BR 05 began with a series of affordable time only and chronograph models. Then, as the years passed, more opulent editions arose including another full-gold edition and several skeletonised models in grey, blue and Nightlum. Today, the Swiss watch manufacturer combines two of its most indulgent design features, the skeletonised dial and a solid gold case, to bring us a new 99-piece limited edition: the Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold.

The pinkish tones of rose gold have overtaken the traditional hues of yellow gold over recent years, and Bell & Ross prove its modernity yet again with the Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold Limited Edition fully engineered from 18 carat rose gold. It’s not only the case, lugs and bracelet crafted from the precious metal but even the bridges of the movement, the hands and markers are all plated in rose gold. In total, the watch uses 155 grams of gold. The rest of the case specifications follow suit to previous BR 05 models with a satin-finished 40 millimetre profile, a fixed bezel placed by four visible screws, a screw down crown at 3 o’clock with push guards, a 100 metre water resistant rating and an exhibition case back.

The dial of the Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold watch is a marvel, and although its overall construction maintains the same aesthetics as previous BR 05 Skeleton watches, it’s rose gold plated bridges deliver a whole new level of luxury. The bridges blend subtly with the rose gold gilded applique indices and skeletonised hour and minute hands which stand out only for their Superluminova filled inserts. The movement on display here is the BR-CAL.322 calibre which can also be spotted through the exhibition case back equipped with a 18ct rose gold plated 360 degree oscillating weight.

The BR-CAL.322 automatic winding movement is based on the Sellita SW 300 calibre and delivers a frequency of 28,800vph, a 40 hour power reserve and 25 jewels, some of which can be seen through the skeleton dial and sapphire crystal case back. The movement provides the Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold Limited Edition watch with classic hours, minutes and seconds hands.

As a solid gold timepiece, it’s no surprise to anybody that the retail price of the Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold watch is a little high. Nevertheless, if you are working with somewhat of a budget, you’ll be pleased to know the design comes with a choice of two straps, one coming in significantly cheaper than the other. The Bell & Ross BR 05 Skeleton Gold on a solid rose gold bracelet retails at £28,800 while a black rubber strap variant is on offer for £19,800.
