German watch manufacturer Sinn presents it’s third limited edition watch engineered from genuine forge-welded Damascus steel. Characterized by its unique wavy pattern and careful craftsmanship, Damascus steel makes up the dial, case and pin buckle of the new Sinn 1800 S GG DAMASZENER watch.
Since the company was founded in 1961, Sinn has been on a journey to innovative ground-breaking materials for use in their luxury watch designs. Some famous examples including the 22-carrat yellow gold watch launched in 1995 which promised material hardness equal to the 220HV of stainless steel. Ten years later they announced their first German Submarine steel watch, a material extremely resistant to sea water and promising unbeatable levels of non-magnetic properties. German Submarine steel can still be found in many of their diving watch collections today.
So, what about Damascus steel? This unusual material was first used by Sinn in 2016 with the launch of the original 1800 DAMASZENER Limited Edition, a two-hand and date display piece finished on a brown calfskin leather strap. The second edition followed suit but with a classic uncoated Damascus steel case, three-hands and a silver wavy dial. For the new release, we’re presented with the familiar organic pattern of the black Damascus steel but with new 18-carat gold hands and hour markers for an unusually refined but appropriately beautiful finish.
Damascus steel is a combination of at least two different types of steel which are layered together to create the unusual surface design. It’s a material widely associated with the engineering of swords and knives but it is very rarely used in industries like watchmaking. For the new Sinn 1800 S GG DAMASZENER Limited Edition, the one-piece dial and central part of the case are forged from a single complete steel block rather than separate components. This process is no easy feat, but when successful it allows the unique wavy pattern of the material to continue fluidly from the dial across the case. Additionally, the flow of lines cannot be manipulated which means each and every 100-piece limited edition is completely one of a kind.
The 43mm case also beautifully flows together with the use of high-grade Damascus steel on both the crown and the bow of the pin clasp. These elements are all presented with additional black hard coating and are engineered on a TEGIMENT technology basis, a patented Sinn technology which raises the hardness level of the steel and provides highly effective protection against scratches and overall wear. The case of the Sinn 1800 S GG DAMASZENER Limited Edition also delivers a case back made from Damascus steel, with Black Hard Coating on a TEGIMENT Technology basis, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides, a screw down crown and a water resistant rating of 100 metre.
One of the biggest differences between the new Sinn 1800 S GG DAMASZENER Limited Edition watch and it’s two predecessors is its dial. Like before, the same wavy-patterned finish makes its way across the centrepiece but for the first time it is meticulously detailed with 18 carat gold appliques for the perfect contrast. These appliques have been attached entirely by hand and pair beautifully with the matching 18 carat gold skeletonised hands for the hours, minutes and seconds. The hardware features additional luminous paint for even better readability.
Powering the Sinn 1800 S GG DAMASZENER Limited Edition is the SW300-1 automatic winding movement. It promises 25 bearing jewels, a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, seconds stop function and a healthy power reserve of 42 hours. The Swiss made calibre also provides a handy black-coloured date window at 6 o’clock.
