Hands-on with the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey Watch

Following on from the debut of the 1858 Iced Sea watch collection last year, Swiss watchmaker Montblanc adds a new frozen-inspired dial colour to the selection of dive watches. The Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch joins several other impressive adventure-worthy timepieces from their Watches & Wonders 2023 collection including a range of 1858 0 Oxygen The 8000 watches with zero oxygen technology inside the case.

Before last year, Montblanc had never stepped into the realm of dive watches and truthfully it wasn’t an area we ever expected to see them in. But then came the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea collection in 2022, a range of relatively affordable and good-looking dive watches conforming to the ISO 6425 norm for diving with durability levels worthy of Montblanc’s Laboratory 500 Hour Test.  The designs also stood out for their unique textured lacquered dials inspired by the freezing glacial lakes of the Mont-Blanc Massif originally coming in classic colours of black, green and blue. Now the series is joined by a fourth colourway with the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch.

As you guessed it, the new Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch offers much of the same specification as its predecessors, differing only its dial colour. According to Montblanc, the elegant shade of grey used on this display is inspired by one of the Mont-Blanc mountain’s largest glaciers, the Mer de Glace, and creates an ice-like texture using gratté-boisé. This unusual technique had never been used before on a watch dial until the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea collection and its results are truly spectacular offering a brilliant depth and luminosity. The grey hues vary from a light silver to a dark anthracite to pair with decent-sized white Superluminova Arabic numerals and box-shaped indexes. There’s also cathedral-shaped, Superluminova hands for the hours and minutes and a date window at 3 o’clock.

For the case, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch offer a stainless steel-engineered 41mm diameter with a screw down crown and screw down case back to ensure a 300 metre water resistant rating. The design conforms to the ISO 6425 standard for diving and is also tested under the Montblanc Laboratory 500 Hour Test to guarantee shock, magnetic and temperature resistance. For further use under the waves, the case is topped by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a two-toned ceramic insert. The ceramic is largely coloured in black with the 0 to 15 section of the 60 minute scale finished in a light grey.

From the front, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch delivers classic sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treated while the back remains closed in stainless steel. Like most of Montblanc’s watches, the back isn’t left bare but handsomely engraved, this time with an image of a dive swimming in the waters beside a glacier. Hiding behind the case back is the Calibre MB 24.17 automatic winding movement based upon the Sellita SW200. It delivers classic time and date function, a 38-hour power reserve and frequency of 28,800vph.

Finally, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch can be ordered on a choice of two straps. The first is a beautifully tapered stainless steel bracelet with a double deployment buckle. The second is a water resistant black rubber strap. The design is a non-limited edition and retails at £2,610 on the rubber band and £2,785 on the bracelet.
