Seiko 5 Sports Watches Review

Seiko watch fans rejoice! The brand new collection of Seiko 5 Sports watches is finally here and ready to join our hungry wrists. This stunning range of men’s watches is the revival of a historic collection from the brand which was first released in 1963. The Seiko Sportmatic 5 was not only Seiko’s first ever automatic day date watch but also the very first of its kind in Japan making it renowned for its innovation and high levels of reliability, durability and performance.

Named the Seiko 5 Sports for a reason, each watch promises five key attributes: an automatic movement, a day and date display, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o clock and a case built especially for durability. The new collection of Seiko 5 Sports watches meet these exact requirements while also boasting an updated case shape, enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystal glass and luminous hands and hour markers.

There are currently 27 variations of Seiko 5 Sports watches to choose from giving you no excuse not to find your perfect style. Each one is categorised into five different groups: The Seiko 5 Sports Style for those who want to go beyond the norm, the Seiko 5 Suits Style for those looking for a bit of refinement, the Seiko 5 Specialist Style which boasts stunning rose gold plated cases, the Seiko 5 Street Style with a more rugged aesthetic and last but not least, the Seiko 5 Sense Style with highly detailed dials for the creative.

As well as there being several key features that the brand chose to keep the same on each Seiko 5 Sports watch, we have also been treated to several improvements. Firstly, let’s take a look at the updated case which follows a shape that we have seen many times before in the Seiko collections. This tried and tested 42.5mm case shape fits perfectly within the sports collection and comes fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel decorated with a 60 minute scale. Each Seiko 5 Sports watch also houses a brand new movement: the Calibre 4R36 which provides 24 jewels, optional manual winding and a power reserve of 41 hours.

We have seen the Seiko calibre 4R36 previously in other Seiko designs and it has proved popular with many collectors. As well as providing classic hour, minute and seconds function, we are given a clear and easy to read day and date window at 3 o clock. The automatic movement also comes with 24 jewels and a frequency of 21,600 bph. Each Seiko 5 Sports watch continues to impress with hardlex mineral crystal glass which has been improved and hardened and a screw down case back which assists in its improved water resistance of 100 metres. The dials are also enhanced with luminous hands and hour markers which come in typical Seiko style with arrow tipped hands and rounded indices.

Alongside these improvements, we have also seen the inclusion of a brand new Seiko 5 logo which looks somewhat like a sideways ‘5’. It seems the new logo honours the five key requirements that gives every Seiko 5 Sports watch its strength while also appearing to be shaped like the traditional Seiko 5 shield. We are also welcomed with a massive selection of dial colours and strap designs to choose from. Just to give you an idea of how spoiled we have become, you can find black dials with red or blue markers, purple dials with gold markers, orange dials with white markers and leather, rubber, NATO and metal straps.

All in all, we absolutely love the new collection of Seiko 5 Sports watches. Their improvements are all but positive and they do an incredible job of providing an upgraded experience while still providing all the same traits that we grew to love in the original collection.
