Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition Watch Review

To celebrate the 60th birthday of the highly distinguished Certina DS Concept, the luxury Swiss watch manufacturer has released this remarkable Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition watch. The DS Concept, otherwise known as Double Security, was first introduced in 1959 and consists of five key elements: sapphire crystal glass, an O-ring on the setting stem, two O-ring seals on the crown, a special seal in the case back and a reinforced case back. This incredible concept has ensured that every Certina DS watch since has remained robust and durable.

The new Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition watch is setting new standards for resilience with all the same five key concepts at its core alongside a new Nivachron balance spring. Developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet, this new technology boasts exceptional paramagnetic characteristics which optimises the resistance of the watch’s movement against magnetic fields. It also has a titanium base ensuring it is resistant to temperature variations. So, as well as being highly durable and incredibly attractive, this Certina DS-1 Special Edition challenges the effects of modern day life with a magnetic, temperature and shock resistant Powermatic 80 movement.

The Powermatic 80 automatic movement doesn’t really need much introduction with it being one of the most famous calibres from Tissot. But for those who are new to the technology, this Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition watch boasts the Powermatic 80 self winding movement which boasts an incredible power reserve of 80 hours, a remarkable feat for any mechanical watch. This means you can leave the watch up to 3 days off the wrist before having to reset it. The movement also provides centre hands for hour, minute and seconds and a big date window at 6 o clock.

The big date feature on this Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition watch is easily its centrepiece made up of two large windows that are easily read at a quick glance. The feature is presented beautifully on an intense green dial created using a special fade effect and sunray finish. The green tone is absolutely breathtaking and can only be truly appreciated up close. The dark green colour is also beautifully complimented by sapphire crystal glass treated with an anti-reflective coating on the inside.

Crafted from 316L stainless steel and measuring to a comfortable size of 41mm, this Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition watch is going to be an easy choice for any Certina watch enthusiasts and special edition watch collectors out there. We also love the addition of the ornamental case back which displays a 60th anniversary decoration and the retro-style Milanese stainless steel strap and folding buckle which takes us back to the 1960’s when the first Certina DS watch was first released.
