Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic Watch Review

Alpina continues to display its strength in design and affordability with their new Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic watch collection. It has been said frequently that with so many pilots watches to choose from it can be quite difficult to narrow it down to the ones that suit you. With competitors like Sinn and IWC dominating the market, it is easy to forget that you can get everything you need in a pilots watch for under £1,000.

The Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic watch is really quite impressive and will hit the sweet spot for many collectors and enthusiasts. Not only do you get a reliable Swiss automatic movement but you are also treated to a truly spectacular aviation inspired dial with oversized applied luminous numerals, propeller styled hour and minute hands and a printed ring graduated at 1-minute intervals. Alpina’s signature red triangle also sits in centre position at the top to mark the 12 o clock position.

The case measures to 44mm by 10.7mm in size and is accentuated by a brushed finish, a nice homage to historic pilots watches. There are four variations of the Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic watch available including two stainless steel models, a black titanium plated and gold plated version. The two stainless steel designs come with either a blue or white dial while the black titanium is finished with a matching dark grey dial and the gold with a beautifully contrasting white face. With the Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic being designed as a tool watch, we are almost certain the two stainless steel models will be the most popular, particularly with a retail price of only £870.

One of our favourite design tropes of the Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic watch has got to be the large crown and its sleek, tapered design while the AL-525 calibre is another thing to celebrate with its 38 hour power reserve. The functions are kept simple on the timepiece with hour, minutes and seconds function and a small date window at 3 o clock and for a nice finishing touch, the case back has been engraved with the brand’s logo.

As far as we are concerned, it is impossible to argue that the Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic watch collection is anything other than impressive and affordable. If you are someone who has been looking for an inexpensive and highly notable pilots watch, then we are certain you will have found it today.
