Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar Watch Review

Last week, as part of their 2021 Watches & Wonders releases and during episode five of their Summit Webcast, Breitling launched a fantastic new collection of Super Chronomat watches. Alongside a B01-powered chronograph and a unique UTC model, the series was home to a selection of Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar watches delivering a unique semi-perpetual calendar.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed that many of Breitling’s more recent releases have focused on their past. Taking the freshly released Premier Heritage collection as an example, they commemorated three icons from their archive with vintage stylings and rare complications. This time it seems the Swiss watch manufacturer are looking more to the future, remaining influenced by their history and the Frecce Tricolori watch they created for the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic fleet in 1983 but kitting it out with plenty of contemporary improvements including large 44mm case sizes, brand new ceramic bezels and a new rubber strap design. Described as a “supercharged performance sports watch” by Georges Kern himself, the Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar delivers something in addition to the rest of the chronograph collection. The same bold aesthetics remain but instead a sophisticated semi-perpetual calendar complication is included which needs adjusting only once every leap year, or every 1,461 days. Powered by the Breitling Caliber 19, the complication delivers classic chronograph complication including a 12 hour totaliser and a 30 minutes counter alongside a semi-perpetual calendar with day, date, month, and moon phase indicators. The moonphase complication in particular is presented beautifully at 3 o’clock, silver in colour and paired with a starry nights sky.

There are currently four Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar watches to choose from. The first is reference I19320251B1S1 dressed in a black dial, a stainless steel bezel with black ceramic bezel insert and a black rubber strap. Reference I19320251B1A1 follows suit but swaps out the rubber strap for a Rouleaux metal bracelet. For a more colourful look, the second two options deliver a blue dial with matching blue ceramic bezel inserts on a choice of a blue rubber strap with reference U19320161C1S1 or a two-toned 18 carat rose gold and stainless steel Rouleux bracelet with model number U19320161C1U1.

The iconic Rouleaux bracelet was reintroduced in the Breitling Chronomat B01 42 collection launched last year, guaranteeing exceptional comfort and flexibility with more than 100 different components, and brushed and polished finishing making up the rifle shell-like design. This time, with the Breitling Super Chronomat collection, the luxury watch brand have launched another new strap, now engineered from rubber. Perfect for those wanting something a little more casual and sporty, the rubber straps are manufactured using state of the art moulding injection techniques and produce three different textures, matte on the edges, roughness in the middle and sleek rubber on the detailing.

The Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar watches are the first of their kind to feature ceramic bezel inserts. Available in black or blue as described, there are eight ceramic inserts in total, each protected by stainless steel delivering the strength of steel and the scratch resistance and shine of ceramic. Like so many Chromomat watches before them, the bezels are unidirectional and ratcheted and boast Superluminova coated rider tab numerals. The 44 millimetre stainless steel cases also come equipped with cambered sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, screw locked crowns with two gaskets and a screwed case back water resistant to 100 metres.

As well as boasting semi-perpetual calendar function, the Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar watches differ to the standard chronograph models in the new collection for their elegant inclusion of rose gold. On the black and blue dials with tone-on-tone chronograph counters, rose gold hands and indexes promise instantly legibility also assisted by Superluminova coating. Rose gold can also be found on the bezels and on the bracelet of the blue-dialled references. The Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar watches also guarantee a power reserve of 42 hours and have been COSC certified vowing for unbeatable accuracy.
