Exclusive review of the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity: Basel 2015

masterpiece 1Maurice Lacroix are celebrating 40 years of the brand’s success this year and what better way to mark the event than to bring out a unique selection of spectacular Limited Editions for the Baselworld show 2015. The Masterpiece Gravity in blue is part of a stunning trio of exclusive limited edition pieces launched this year by the brand in Switzerland and is undeniably the most breathtaking of all three.

The creation destined to influence imagination and permeate a sense of wonder, is defined by the brand themselves as “the perfect embodiment of the Maurice Lacroix approach to watchmaking”. Of course the watch ticks all of the boxes for a stunning piece of craftsmanship. It is made from a beautiful selection of high-end materials which we will talk about shortly, but the Limited Edition also recognises the call for a stylish piece that is equally abundant in panache. Appropriately, the brand have decided to make only 40 pieces available to their devotees, evoking all the more desire to own such an admirable investment piece for the future. The brand intend for the latest member of the Gravity collection to exude confidence, perfect balance and also to become an iconic reference to the brand’s extraordinary talent. As well as the change in material components and colour, the watch also demonstrates yet another layer to Maurice Lacroix’s engineering skills. The case is made from their proprietary alloy, Powerlite which provides a protective watch case that is twice as hard as stainless steel yet also twice as light. Similar to the new Pontos S Extremes which we spoke about here, the case takes is anthracite colouring from a process known as anodization which involves inserting colour pigments into the pores of the case material. In terms of capability, the masterpiece 2Masterpiece Gravity is 50 metres water resistant, has a screwed caseback with anti-glare properties to its sapphire crystal glass on both sides, together with off centred hours and minutes hands at the 2 o’clock location – a distinctive eye catching characteristic of all three new Gravity pieces. The visible assortment and oscillator between the 6 and 8 o’clock offers a truly unique concept to the watch, allowing the lucky owner an appreciative insight into a segment of the internal structure belonging to the watch. The small seconds subdial is off centred at the 4 o’clock mark. The new Gravity addition holds the automatic calibre ML230 which vibrates at an impressive 18,000 alt/h, 2.5 Hz. Maurice Lacroix have engineered the watch to promote a beautifully balanced dial face with decorative features such as the rhodium coated bridges “Cotes de Geneve” effect in “Colimacon”. The bridges have received sandblasted finishing and diamond cut edges, radiating a beautiful light trimming to the angles and edges of the timepiece. Above all delights of the new Limited Edition, the fetching zaffre blue minutes and hour dial has to be the focal point of the whole piece. If it is not somehow possible to get enough satisfaction out of parading the watch on one’s wrist it may be worth making a few minutes each day for the light to dance across the radiant blue tones of the vivid centre-domed dial. Two polished screws piercing either side of the dial hold the feature in place adding to a truly solid feel to the watch. The Maurice Lacrois Masterpiece Gravity can be ordered on the choice of a black or brown crocodile skin strap or alternatively a black soft touch effect and is available on a satin finished foldable clasp with push buttons.
