Junghans Form A Watch Review

It is always refreshing to discuss new Junghans watches. Not only are they pleasant to talk about it, but they boast some of the most handsome and unobtrusive designs in the industry. The brand new Junghans Form A watch collection provides the perfect entrance model for someone starting an obsession with luxury watches. Retailing at only £830, you are treated to a stunning automatic movement, newly designed dial concept and an exquisite smokey mineral glass case back.

Measuring to what is often considered the perfect size for any wrist, the new Junghans Form A watch comes to 39.1mm in width and only 9.5mm in height, allowing the stainless steel case to mould elegantly to the body. Junghans are famous for their Max Bill watches and it appears they have drawn their favourite elements from that collection to the Form A design. The sleek lugs and thin case are almost identical but it is the dial of the Junghans Form A watch that has everyone talking.

There are two dial variants available, one with Arabic numerals and another with stencil thin printed batons. The thin bezel gives way to more dial space, something many German watches seem to appeal to – Nomos Glashutte watches being another example. The clean, large dial space is slightly concave, rising from the central post to meet the edge of the case. The striking effect is deep enough to be noticed without feeling too dramatic. The matte silver plated galvanic finished dial of the Junghans Form A watch also showcases unique square markers embossed around the outer edge of the dial, acting as indices. These are probably our favourite detail to the new dial since it lends a small amount of inconsistency to an otherwise smooth finish.  Another nice detail is that the five minute interval markers are painted the same colour as the strap, bringing a fluid unity to the design.

Turn the Junghans Form A watch over and you are greeted to a wonderful smokey mineral glass case back which offers a view into the exquisite automatic movement. To be admired is the J800.2 self winding movement which is based off the ETA 2824-2 calibre. It equips the timepiece with hours, minutes and seconds function, a date feature at 3 o clock and a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement also boasts 25 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour.
