Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition Smartwatch Review

On July 20, 1969, the first humans landed on the Moon as part of NASA’s Apollo 11 lunar mission. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and Alpina have released this remarkable Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition smartwatch to celebrate the occasion. Not only does the timepiece boast a beautiful matte blue and black aesthetic inspired by the deep infinite colours of space but the watch itself has even been up there where the rest of us can only dream of going.

In partnership with “Sent into Space”, a start-up company specialising in Space photography, the Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition watch was pushed to its limits as it was strapped to a camera and sent on a 3 hour flight into space. The film offers breathtaking views of the smartwatch as its launched to an altitude of 33,793 metres above sea level, nearly four times the height of Mount Everest. The watch reaches the region known as Near Space where the watch is exposed to temperatures as low as -60°C and pressures less than 0.2% of that experienced at the Earth’s surface. For three hours, the smartwatch endures incredible challenges, proving once and for all that Alpina watches, and this Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition in particular, is a tool for adventure.

As well as its incredibly robust construction, the Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition smartwatch is fully equipped with impressive smartwatch functionality and showcases an aesthetic that looks breathtaking on the wrist. To honour the birthday of the moon landing, the case back of the timepiece is beautifully decorated with a special engraving which features the moon at the centre of Alpina’s famous triangle logo. The dial is also breathtaking for its blue matte finish, silver indexes and hands treated with black luminescent coating and a digital screen to display a variety of measurements.

The 45mm navy fibre glass and stainless steel case sits boldly on the wrist equipped with a bi-directional turning compass bezel, scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass and luxurious navy blue leather strap. Hidden within the case is the MMT-283-1 Horological Smartwatch calibre which provides a fantastic array of features for any avid adventurer. As well as classic hour, minute, seconds and date function, the Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition boasts activity tracking, sleep tracking, dynamic coaching, world timer, smart alarm, calls and message notifications, UV indicator, altitude, compass, temperature, time recorder and barometer. All these fantastic smartwatch features can be assessed through the dedicated Alpina companion app which is available to download on your smartphone.

We’re not sure there is a watch better suited for the adrenaline junkie or the mountain adventurer than this Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition watch. Its remarkable capability was truly tested when it was sent into space, a mission which showed the watch stay powered and connected to the companion app during its full 3 hour trip. The smartwatch even showed the correct altitude on the digital screen and bezel despite being well above the theoretical maximum operating altitude.

The Alpina AlpinerX Space Edition watch that was sent into space has now found itself a new home on ground in the Alpina museum in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland. But don’t worry, you can still get your hands on one of the 299 limited edition pieces while they last!
