Emulating the appearance of the aurora borealis with a large luminous moon at its centre, Meistersinger deliver their latest take on the classic moonphase watch with the Meistersinger Stratoscope.
Remarkable for their single-handed watches, Meistersinger have confidently stepped out of their comfort zone over the last few years, venturing from time-only designs into more complex chronograph, day-date and moonphase complications. Just this year alone, they celebrated their 20th anniversary with the Meistersinger Bell Hora, a rare Sonnerie au passage watch, and the Meistersinger Astroscope which yet again embodied the German watch manufacturer’s appreciation for unique complications with a day of the week display allocated to celestial bodies in our solar system.
Once more, astronomy becomes the main inspiration behind Meistersinger’s designs and new for 2021, the Meistersinger Stratoscope Moonphase watch features one of the largest moonphase displays we have ever seen. Taking up the top half of the dial, the moon is designed with incredible photorealistic accuracy taken from an image of the earth’s natural satellite. Also, like real life, the moon lights up thanks to a generous helping of Superluminova.
Although not as obviously magical as the large moonphase aperture, the bottom half of the Meistersinger Stratoscope’s dial is just as wonderful. Dressed in a jet black finish with varying shades of blue running through, the dial is designed to mimic the skies of the aurora borealis, or the northern lights. The unique effect really makes it seem as though the large moonphase complication is naturally circling the dial as if it were the earth. The rest of the dial remains typical for Meistersinger, with double digit numerals from 01 to 12 orbiting the circumference, a large single white need-shaped hand for hours and a rounded date window at 6 o’clock. Like the moonphase complication, the central hand and hour markers are treated to glow in the dark Superluminova.
Powering the Meistersinger Stratoscope watch is the MS Luna automatic winding calibre based on the Sellita SW-220. The movement itself is nothing overly exceptional, delivering a 38 hour power reserve, 28 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. What is impressive, however, is the Meistersinger design module added on top for the moonphase display. According to the brand, the moon takes 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.9 seconds to circumnavigate the earth and most moonphase watches round this figure down to 29.5 days. This means they end up deviating by eight hour per year and will need adjusting my one complete day every third year. With the Meistersinger Stratoscope, improved accuracy is promised with the moonphase indicator only requiring slight adjustment after 128 years.
The MS Luna movement is housed within a stainless steel case and exposed through an exhibition case back, revealing blue screws, gold finishing and a proprietary rotor. The case of the Meistersinger Stratoscope watch measures to 43 millimetres in diameter and 11.7 millimetres in height, a size befitting to the large proportions of the moonphase complication. The case also comes with brushed finishing on the sides, a polished bezel, scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and sleek lugs secured to a vintage-styled dark brown leather strap.
