Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown Watch Review

Making a bold statement both on the wrist and on the current state of our world’s oceans, the new Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown watch has been designed in collaboration with sustainable clothing company Outerknown to help raise awareness for ocean conservation. The striking timepiece follows the familiar design of the Breitling Superocean Heritage model but brings with it a new unique strap crafted from recycled nylon waste.

Earlier this year, Breitling revealed their new squad concept, an idea which involved having groups of three people, all experts in their professions, come together and work towards a common goal. Part of Breitling’s Surfers Squad is Outerknown co-founder Kelly Slater, a surfer who has committed his life to fighting against polluted oceans and beaches. It was through this partnership that the Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown watch was born.

Mark Walker, CEO of Outerknown commented: “Breitling is a perfect and natural fit for Outerknown. Like us, they work closely with Ocean Conservancy, and it’s clear that we, and they, share common values.”

The centrepiece of the Breitling Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown watch is, of course, the bold blue strap crafted from nylon waste. This is a first for Breitling who decided to produce the band and the watch’s packaging from ECONYL yarn, a material created from plastic waste like abandoned fishing nets and other waste found in the sea. The strap was also inspired by a fabric used and designed by Outerknown while the taffeta dark blue colour reflects the watch’s connection to ocean sustainability.

Although it’s a first for Breitling, they are not the only watch manufacturer to have designed a watch using recycled materials. Oris have recently released their World Clean Up Day special edition which boasted a strap also made from recycled plastic. With planet conservation becoming such a huge issue, we can only hope that more luxury watchmakers take a leaf out of Breitling’s book and join in with these efforts.

The case of the Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown watch is crafted from black DLC coated stainless steel and measures to a bold 44mm in diameter. It’s thick unidirectional ratcheted bezel looks striking and offers ultra-hard scratch resistance and an all-black finish to the case. Equipped with a screw locked crown, cambered sapphire crystal glass and a special edition screwed down case back engraved with ‘Outerknown’, the watch also ensures a water resistance of 200 metres.

Hidden within the heart of this striking timepiece is the Breitling 13 calibre, a chronometer certified self-winding movement which offers an impressive power reserve of 48 hours, 25 jewels and 28,800 vibrations per hour. The dial comes in a striking ocean blue colour with white accents, a black nickel-plated ‘B’ logo and a matte grey ‘SuperOcean’ inscription at 3 o clock. For ultimate functionality, the Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown watch is also equipped with hour and minute hands, chronograph central seconds, seconds counter, chronograph minute counter, chronograph hour counter and a date window.

The Breitling Superocean Heritage II Outerknown watch really is a special timepiece not only for its magnificent design but for its homage to ocean sustainability. Retailing at £5,600, the watch is available to order today for delivery mid-November. For more information on the Breitling Outerknown watch and where to get your own, click here.
