TAG Heuer is a really accessible and approachable luxury watch brand and it knows exactly who its audience is. It knows how to hit the sports watch fan’s sweet spot and has produced a huge range of dive watches that tick all the boxes when it comes to robustness, functionality and style. When people discuss solar-powered watches, the same names come up. The likes of Seiko and Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology are instantly recalled and, as of late, TAG Heuer, too. Over the last couple of years, TAG Heuer has been refining its skills in this specific area. The Swiss giant produces the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph, which is worth a look if you’re in the market for something robust, super sophisticated and eco-friendly. Let’s dive into this Easter egg of a watch and find out what people really love about it so much.

Ideal Dimensions

To start with, the size of this TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional Solargraph 200 watch reference WBP1115.BA0000 is 40mm, which makes it a perfect unisex size for both women looking for a bold design and men with small wrists. The size makes sense when we think about the industry leaning towards smaller case sizes as of late, and the desire for these more compact dimensions across the board. The watch measures around 11mm in thickness, again making it a great daily tool, since it sits close to the wrist whether combining it with sporty attire or something sleeker in the office. What contributes to the overall easy-wearing nature of this solar-powered dive watch is its robust stainless steel case. That’s not to say there aren’t other options out there if you love the thought of solar-powered technology but want a different case finish. TAG Heuer offers this watch in titanium too, and with a carbon-coated finish for a sleeker and more youthful look. Of course, the beauty of the lightweight option is that you barely notice the watch on the wrist. That said, there’s still a huge fan base out there for the conventional steel case. For a start, it perfectly captures the zeitgeist of the steel sports watch era, but secondly, it feels substantial on the wrist too. This quality alone makes it perfect for wearing during sports or adventurous outdoor pursuits.

Solar-Powered Technology

The TH50-00 is the movement inside this new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional Solargraph 200 watch and it’s actually the same movement you’ll find in other brands of watch since it’s produced by La Joux Perret. Now, there is a stigma attached to quartz movements that, as true enthusiasts, we are all aware of. But credit where credit is due, there are a lot of advantages to owning a quartz watch (aside from them being incredibly accurate and requiring no maintenance or regular servicing). In this form, the movement is not just quartz-operated but is also solar-powered, and that’s not even the best bit. What is truly impressive is the fact that this watch requires very little light to function and can reserve power for considerable amounts of time without needing to be recharged. Even though many collectors love to watch the mechanically beating heart of a movement as it performs through an exhibition caseback, solar-powered quartz is really beginning to catch on, and you can easily see why.

Built For Anything

When I say that the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional Solargraph 200 watch is built for anything, I really mean it. You can dive with this watch, swim with it, play water sports with it, or pair it with sporty attire at the weekend. It just doesn’t matter, because TAG Heuer has managed to balance all the elements of this watch perfectly. It’s neither too tool-like nor too dressy on the metal bracelet. The colour isn’t too bold that it detracts anything from an outfit but, at the same time, the fact that the dial is green injects some colour to the wrist. It’s also compact and robust, with a classic dial layout that follows in the faithful footsteps of those revamped Aquaracer Professional watches from a few years back. The bezel of the new Aquaracer watch is also made from steel and is executed in a brushed finish for added sportiness. The 60-minute dive scale is applied in relief on the steel surface, exerting a somewhat traditional feel. It moves in a unidirectional way, preventing dive time from becoming accidentally extended.

The main body of the case is executed in polished steel, which brings out the dressier side of the Aquaracer. The watch case is topped with sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with anti-reflective technology to grant a clear and glare-ridden view into the dial. As I mentioned, the watch is good for all outdoor-type exercises, including plenty of underwater time, since it offers a 200-meter water-resistant construction and a screw-down crown that has been tastefully engraved with the TAG Heuer logo. The back of the case is also engraved with the famous TAG Heuer compass star that nods to the brand’s penchant for creating watches for adventure.

Inspired By Nature

Closing with the dial, we’ve saved the best until last. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph is inspired by elements of nature, hence its rather striking green-coloured dial. The shade is almost organic and is enhanced by the company’s instantly recognisable striped pattern and a light blue central seconds hand. The central hour and minute hands on the dial, together with the baton hour markers, have all been treated with Super-LumiNova. The hour markers also feature an accompanying luminous-coated square for added visibility. With the seconds hand glowing in a different colour to the rest of the dial elements, it’s clear that TAG Heuer has thrown everything into creating a legible dial with this design. The 3 o’clock location also features a date window, while the TAG Heuer shield and lettering take up their usual place on the dial at 12 o’clock.
