Hands-on with the Sinn U50 DS Watch

Sinn are focusing entirely on their diver’s watch collection for 2023. We’ve already covered the launch of their brand-new Sinn T50 watch collection and the Sinn U1 Mother of Pearl watch. Now joining the line-up is the Sinn U50 DS which combines the 500m water resistant German Submarine Steel case of their popular U50 model with one of their unique decorative grinding dials.

Both the Sinn U1 and the Sinn U50 are great examples of an engineered dive watch. They have a lot in common; they boast robust German Submarine Steel cases built with scratch resistant TEGIMENT technology, captive diver bezels and are tested, certified and approved by most diving watch standards (ISO and DIN). The Sinn U50 wears smaller on the wrist with a diameter of 41mm compared to the 45mm size of the U1. The Sinn U50 also has a reduced water resistant rating of 500 metres which is surpassed by the 1,000 metre water resistance on the Sinn U1. Choosing between the two is totally dependant on your preferences and lifestyle, but both are incredibly beautiful and high-functioning diving instruments. Last year, Sinn launched their U1 model with a unique decorative grinding dial while the U50 was adorned with a mother of pearl display. It seems for 2023, the two are doing are swap as the U1 Mother of Pearl was launched last week alongside the new Sinn U50 DS Grinding Dial watch.

Typically, the Sinn U50 is joined by a technical-looking dial in matte black with bold red accents on the hands. The Sinn U50 DS however is significantly warmer in looks, perfect for those that want the functionality of the premium diver’s watch but with a dressier finish on the display. The unique finish to the dial is created using a grinding process where irregular, intricate lines are drawn onto a bronzed base. The textured finish creates an exciting interplay of colours, and due to the rare grinding technique used, no same pattern can be replicated. This means every of the 1,000 limited edition pieces of the Sinn U50 DS is completely unique.

For the rest of the Sinn U50 DS watch, there’s no surprises. The dial is completed by large, geometric hands for the hours and minutes and markers generously applied with glow in the dark Superluminova. There’s also a lollipop box-shaped seconds hand and a date window at 3 o’clock. As for the case, the Sinn U50 DS Limited Edition retains its familiar 41mm diameter and bead-blasted German Submarine Steel construction. This material is famed for being high-strength and seawater-resistant and when paired with Sinn’s scratch resistant TEGIMENT technology, it feels invincible. The captive diver’s bezel is also equipped with TEGIMENT technology and features an engraved 60-minute scale in white.

As mentioned previously, the Sinn U50 DS watch boasts a 500 metre water resistant rating, assisted by the 4 o’clock screw down crown and screwed case back. The rating meets the technical requirements for waterproofness, as set out in standard DIN 8310 and European diving equipment standards EN 250 / EN14143. Hiding behind the case back is the tried-and-tested SW300-1 self-winding movement with 25 bearing jewels, a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph. Last but not least, you can order the Sinn U50 DS Limited Edition on a choice of two straps: a classic black rubber band or a German Submarine Steel three-row link bracelet.
