Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 Watch Review

Following the successful launch of the Aikon Tide collection last month, a series of ocean-bound upcycled plastic designs, Swiss watch manufacturer Maurice Lacroix unveils three special edition watches upholding the same values launched in collaboration with FIBA 3×3. The global basketball logo is arranged on the dial and case back of each Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 watch honouring the brand’s status as the Official Timekeeper of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour.

Time is an important ally in the pursuit of points needed to win the FIBA 3×3 World Tour. The action-packed game, which began on the streets, is now part of the Olympic programme and is played worldwide in some of the most exciting, urban settings, watched by millions of fans around the globe. Maurice Lacroix are no strangers to precision timekeeping and as such, became the Official Timekeeper of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour this year. In honour of their new role, Maurice Lacroix delivers another set of Aikon Tide watches, again with vibrant dial shades and funky coloured straps but with the 3×3 logo across the design inspired by the imagery seen on the official Wilson ball.

The inaugural Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide watch collection was an unexpected treat from the Swiss watch manufacturer last month. It delivered all the popular attributes of the regular Aikon but with cases formed of ocean-bound upcycled plastic. The composite material not only supports our environment but delivers impressive durability for ambitious wearing. It is twice as hard as standard plastic, five times more resistant and has a carbon footprint significantly less than the production of virgin PET. To engineer each Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 watch and its packaging, 17 bottles are used for the bezel, case back, case, crown, end-piece and buckle, meaning 17 fewer bottles polluting our worlds ocean.

There are three special edition Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 watches to choose from. Two come with classic monochromatic colour palettes including one with a black dial, silver case and black rubber strap and a second with a white dial, black case and white rubber strap. The third model stands out significantly with an eye-popping colourway wonderfully inspired by the official Wilson ball of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour. It features a bright yellow case and dial, an orange minutes track and contrasting blue on the bezel, crown and strap. All three models feature the 3×3 logo arranged in an elaborate motif on the dial with the same emblem engraved onto the case back.

Other features of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 watches include 40mm cases with flat sapphire crystal glass, a screw in crown and a water resistant rating of 100 metres. Each model is equipped with a strap made from silicon rubber paired with a upcycled plastic pin buckle, a fixed bezel detailed with the iconic Aikon six-arms and a closed case back. Within, a standard Swiss made quartz movement ensures the accurate timekeeping of Superluminova coated hands for the hours and minutes, a slender seconds hand and a date complication at 3 o’clock.

With environmentally conscious behaviour in mind, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Tide FIBA 3×3 watches are not presented in excessive packaging but in a colour-coordinated mug that can be used time and time again.
