Hands-on with the colourful Sinn 556I Limited Editions

Typically, following the arrival of events like Watches & Wonders, we begin to get a picture of what this year’s “watch trend” will be. Usually, it’s a dial colour like all the forest-green shades of last year and the blue dials of the year before that. For 2022 however, no one shade has stood out but instead it seems to be the entire rainbow. From Breitling’s reimagined Navitimer series to the new Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 collection, bold, bright and colourful dials as a whole are taking the industry by storm. Now, German watch manufacturer Sinn jumps aboard the trend with the release of four colourful Sinn 566I Limited Editions.

For many, the classic Sinn 556 represents one of the best German-made mechanical watches on the market offering sparse dial designs, superior readability and high-precision movements inspired by pilot and navigation cockpit clocks. The collection is typically presented with uniform dial colours of black or a deep navy blue in a matte finsih, but in a departure from the brand’s unusual aesthetic, we’re now treated to four limited edition centrepieces. Named after different gemstones, the new Sinn 566I Limited Editions come in Emerald Green, Carnelian Red, Citrine Yellow and Aquamarine Blue and to honour their inspiration further, are created using a colourful metallic varnish lending them a colourful glittering effect.

The dials of the colourful Sinn 556I watches also reveal a second significant change, the removal of the date window at 3 o’clock. For so many luxury watch collectors, an unnecessary date window is enough to reconsider buying a timepiece that is otherwise perfect and so we’re sure the exclusion of the complication in this case is going to be a huge win. No matter which colour you choose, the dial presents rhodium-plated stick indexes and sword-shaped hands finished in lume and a matching white printed minutes track.

Other than their newly explored dials, the new Sinn 556I Limited Edition watches mirror much  of previous 556 models we’ve come to know and love. This includes satin-finished stainless steel cases with dimensions of 38.5mm in diameter and 11mm in height with smooth fixed bezels, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a screw down crown worthy of a water resistant rating of 200 metres. The case back is also engineered from stainless steel with a sapphire crystal glass insert so you can enjoy the self-winding movement housed inside.

As for the movement within the colourful Sinn 556I watches, you’ll find a straightforward self-winding calibre from Sellita, the SW200-1 to be exact. It offers classic hours, minutes and seconds function, 26 bearing jewels, 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour and a power reserve of 38 hours. Completing each Sinn 556I Limited Edition is a nice grey canvas and leather strap equipped with a matching satin-polished stainless steel folding buckle.

The colourful Sinn 556I watches are limited to 400 pieces each (that’s 400 pieces per dial colour) and will retail at £1,285.
