The 2021 Certina DS Powermatic 80 Collection

When it comes to stylish dress watches, Certina isn’t exactly the first brand that comes to mind. If you were to ask for an affordable divers watch on the other hand, the Swiss watch manufacturer would certainly be in the running. That being said, Certina’s latest collection has me thinking otherwise with their new 2021 Certina DS Powermatic 80 line offering a stunning set of vintage-inspired dress watches that are not only affordable but spectacular to look at.

You may remember the Certina DS Chronograph watch launched at the end of last year. It was designed to reflect the brand’s 130 year watchmaking heritage with a handsome silver bi-compax dial, blue chronograph hardware and a historic Certina logo embraced on the case back, all inspired by a timepiece Certina released back in 1940. For the new Certina DS Powermatic 80 collection, the brand has recaptured some of these same vintage codes and paired it with their legendary Powermatic 80 automatic winding movement for a stylish, robust and easy-wearing dress watch.

There are six Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches to choose from, each differing in their case material, dial colour and strap design but maintaining all the familiar characteristics of the legendary DS concept range. For those unfamiliar with the Certina DS concept, it was first introduced back in 1959 and ensures every design has sapphire crystal glass, an O-ring on the setting stem, two O-ring seals on the crown, a special seal in the case back and a reinforced case back. The Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches for 2021 offer exactly that alongside a 100 metre water resistant rating, a 41mm diameter and 10.8mm height.

For the cases of the Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches, there is a choice of classic stainless steel or yellow gold PVD which is then secured to the wrist by a variety of strap designs including dark brown and tan leather and coloured textile. Our personal favourite is that of the striped textile straps which hark back to early military watches. Their retro personalities also come largely from their dials which are slightly domed and topped by box-shaped sapphire crystal glass, just like that of the DS Chronograph. Dressed in a choice of white, blue, gold, green or brown, the dials are sunray finished and decorated with skeletonised sword-shaped hands, arrow-shaped hour markers and a classic black minutes track for the seconds. The hands and indexes allow for easy readability with dots of Superluminova marking their tips.

As you’ve probably guessed by their name, the Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches are powered by the Powermatic 80 movement. We’ve talked about this calibre several times in the past, not only in other Certina watches but in designs from brands like Rado, Mido and Tissot. It was manufactured by the Swatch Group and so has been tossed between several of the company’s sub-brands ever since. Despite it’s 80 hour power reserve, Nivachron balance spring and extra shock absorbers for resistant to magnetism and impact, it is one of the many reasons why the Certina Powermatic 80 range remains so affordable.
