TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition Review

As we head into 2020, TAG Heuer celebrate their 160th anniversary and for the occasion they are releasing the stunning new TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition watch. This breathtaking chronograph is limited to only 1,860 pieces and beautifully tributes the iconic Carrera collection, a collection that symbolises their audacious spirit, revolutionary technical ability and their legendary relationship with motor racing.

To design the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition, TAG Heuer became inspired by a historic 1960’s Heuer Carrera watch with the reference 2447S. This clean, silver-dialled chronograph remains a highly sought after piece, not only because it was one of the first Carrera models released but its handsome monochromatic design was breathtaking. It is for that very reason that the new TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver watch is going to find itself incredibly popular on its release in June, as it fills the gap for collectors dreaming of owning the original.

The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition makes for a beautiful reinterpretation of the 2447S as it hosts a similar aesthetic alongside some new contemporary improvements. Its stainless steel case has been increased from 36mm to 39mm, a choice that will arguably divide fans with different sized wrists. Nevertheless, the smooth, clean case shape remains the same as do the slender lugs and fixed bezel. We are also treated to domed sapphire crystal glass to replace the less scratch resistant plexiglass on the original.

The defining feature of both the new model and its historic counterpart is the gorgeous monochromatic silver dial. This has been left almost entirely the same with stunning sunburst detailing and three well-positioned chronograph counters adored with circular graining. The faceted central hands for hour and minutes look identical with Superluminova rather tritium providing glow in the dark legibility while the chronograph seconds hand is kept unassuming in black. Our favourite dial feature on the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition has to be the addition of the former company name at 12 o clock, a neat touch that proves the brand are neither too shy nor proud to show off their heritage.

Powering the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition watch is their Calibre Heuer 02 automatic winding movement, a replacement for the Valjoux 72 manual winding movement found in the original. It would have been nice for the movement to have remained manual-winding, but it makes perfect sense for a modern-day wearer to prefer an automatic calibre – particularly one with a power reserve of 80 hours! The construction of the Calibre Heuer 02 does also mean that the continuous seconds indicator has been moved to the 6 o’ clock position rather than the 9 o’ clock position on the original. This small change seems irrelevant when you consider the extraordinary performance this movement is known for.

The Calibre Heuer 02 automatic winding movement is constructed of a total of 168 components including 33 jewels, a vertical clutch and a column wheel which provides remarkable chronometric accuracy. You can witness the power of the calibre through the sapphire crystal glass back alongside a stunning new oscillating mass decorated with a special anniversary engraving to mark TAG Heuer’s 160th birthday.

Fittingly limited to only 1,860 pieces TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition is undoubtedly going to sell out quickly on its release in June. The retail price is yet to be confirmed, but we are expecting it to be in the region of £4,950.
