Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition Watch Review

Based on the brand’s much-beloved dive watch, the new Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition has been released to mark the 30th anniversary of German reunification. The anniversary, which will be celebrated on October 3rd, is an important date for German citizens and German watchmakers alike who honour the day of October 3rd, 1990 when both sides of German were reunited following the Fall of the Berlin Wall a year before.

For Sinn, the reunification has another significance beyond the historical date as they explain: “For us it’s synonymous with the story of two companies which continue to actively embrace the merging of East and West to this day: qualified engineer Lothar Schmidt, owner of Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH, and Doctor of Engineering Ronald Boldt, co-owner and Managing Director of Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte (SUG), have continued to develop the partnership established in 1999 between Sinn Spezialuhren and SUG. Lothar Schmidt has held 74% of all SUG shares since the disastrous flood of 2002. Working with Ronald Boldt, he has created an upmarket case manufacturing company, which is now successfully managed primarily by son Daniel Boldt.” Just like the statement made by Willy Brandt when the Berlin Wall came down on 9 November 1989: “Now what belongs together will grow together.”

Honouring the spirit of “working together” and to celebrate the anniversary of the reunification, the German watch brand has unveiled the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition which has been carefully designed based on the date it commemorates. The high-strength German Submarine Steel case, which is highly resistant to saltwater and boasts fantastic non-magnetic properties, remains engineered by SUG. The dial is also purposely detailed with colours of black, red and gold which have long been symbols for the German reunification and are anchored in the constitution as the colours of the flag. Red accents are found across the diver’s bezel and on the text of the dial while the central seconds hand is decorated in high-gloss gold plating.

Black encapsulates the rest of the aesthetic with the 44mm German Submarine steel case decorated with all-over black hard coating used exclusively for surfaces designed with the brand’s famous TEGIMENT technology. The combination of the black coating and TEGIMENT technology not only ensures the quality of the colour coating but guarantees the surface has an even greater level of protection against scratches. Typical to the ultra-robust U1 dive watch, the new Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition also comes fitted with a divers bezel with minute ratcheting, luminous key mark and a captive connection to the case.

The Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition continues to demonstrate perfect unity with the case paired with a crown, uniquely positioned at 4 o’clock. This purposeful placement allows for ergonomic operations and when paired with sapphire crystal glass and a solid steel case back ensures an impressive water resistant rating of 1,000 metres. For optimal legibility in low lighting and underwater, the carefully detailed dial with its breathtaking red, gold and black accents is also decorated with luminescent indexes and hands.

Housed beneath the dial is the SW 200-1 automatic winding mechanism. The simple yet robust choice of calibre provides central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at 3 o clock and a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement also promises a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is fitted with 26 bearing jewels.

As standard, the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition comes presented on a sporty black rubber strap embossed with the Sinn logo and fitted with a matching black hard coated folding buckle. You can also choose from a selection of strap alternatives including a bright red silicone strap or a more sophisticated black hard coated TEGIMENT steel bracelet. The limited edition of 300 pieces is available to order now and retails at £2,635 on silicone and £2,727 on bracelet.
