Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Blue Watch Review

Alongside the new series of Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Worldtimer watches we’ve already covered here, the Swiss watch manufacturer has launched a single, blue-dialled Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT watch without the internal rotating worldtimer bezel. The luxury wristwatch swaps out the latter for a traditional 24 hour scale and pairs it with a classic steel case and elegant blue gradient dial.

Last month, Raymond Weil launched a pair of Freelancer GMT Worldtimer watches that combined the traditional round case of the Freelancer series with a dual-crown configuration internal rotating 24-city world time bezel and GMT hand. The models available included reference 2765-SBC-52001 with a brushed stainless steel case, a bronze bezel and a pair of matching bronze crowns. At the centre, the watch then elected a gorgeous green gradient dial to pair with its green leather strap. Meanwhile, reference 2765 BKC-20001 was crafted entirely from black DLC coated stainless steel and was joined by a gradient black dial and a black leather strap. Joining these arguably more complicated models is a new Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Blue watch with a steel case and blue dial.

Just like the worldtimer models previously mentioned, the new Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Blue watch boasts a 40.5mm case with a height of 9.7mm and an overall lug-to-lug distance of 48.35mm. It mirrors the same elegant shape of most Freelancer watches with angular lugs, a smooth unadorned bezel and sapphire crystal glass. The entire case is engineered from stainless steel with no bronze or black DLC coating in sight, opting for brushed and polished surfaces. A significant change to the classic Freelancer case is the addition of two crowns. Both screw down, the crowns are used to manipulate the movement and internal bezel. The former is located at 2 o’clock and signed off by the Raymond Weil logo while the latter sits at 4 o’clock and is engraved with an image of a globe. The case also delivers a screw down case back assisting in a 100 metre water resistant rating and is set with a sapphire display window for admiring the movement within.

The dial of the Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Blue watch is also relatively close to its worldtimer siblings, offering the same gentle gradation effect but in blue. The colour starts as a deep navy at the top before vertically fading into a nice light blue. This central component homes the four hands for the hours, minutes, lollipop seconds and GMT. The GMT hand is tipped by a large red arrow for easy readability. Surrounding the main dial is a section with concentric grooving with silvered hour markers and a blue printed minutes track. From there, the dial slopes up to reveal a 24 hour scale printed in black and white, each colour defining the day and night time hours. A nice moon emblem also replaces the number 24 sitting opposite the date at 6 o’clock.

The movement responsible for powering the new Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT Blue watch is the Calibre 3230 automatic winding movement. It takes its base from the elaboré-grade version of the Sellita SW330-2 with independent adjustability for the 24-hour hand and the date display. You’re also guaranteed a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz) and a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. Completing the Raymond Weil Freelancer GMT watch is a blue calfskin leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a stainless steel double push-button deployment clasp.
