Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition Watch Review

Cut from the same cloth, Oris has partnered up with independent denim company Momotaro Jeans for their latest special edition. The Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition watch, with its unique denim striped strap, high precision automatic winding movement and bronze tipped bezel, brings to life the spirit of the Japanese textile company whose high quality jeans are worn by trendsetters in the Far East and around the world.

First established in 1992 by Mr Hisao Manabe, Momotaro began with just three employees in the small coastal town of Kojima in Okayama. From the very beginning, Mr Manabe refused to compromise on quality; his denim would use only the finest long-staple cotton and use only deep indigo rope to achieve and maintain the best possible fade. Almost 30 years later, the textile brand employs over 140 people in factories, stores and offices across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okayama. His workshops continue to make use of vintage shuttle looms to create a handmade feel to the weave and every small detail is hand-sewn. This new international denim standard is represented by the brand’s signature white ‘battle stripes’ also found on the strap of the Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition watch.

Momotaro’s mantra: ‘Made by hand without compromise’ is something Oris quickly related to and it is exactly why this partnership made sense. In the same way the textile brand makes use of precision manufacturing and traditional hand craftsmanship, the luxury Swiss watch manufacturer creates beautiful, high quality watches in the same way. Their shared spirit for quality, accuracy and design has secured the new Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition watch as one of the most remarkable and more unique watch releases of 2020 so far.

As part of the iconic Sixty Five Divers collection, the Oris x Momotaro Special Edition watch boasts a nautical-inspired aesthetic enhanced by the casual, sophisticated finish of the Indigo Momotaro denim strap decorated with two white ‘battle stripes’ and fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle. The comfortable strap allows the 40mm stainless steel case to mould effortlessly to wrist alongside the sleek tapered lugs and 100 metre water resistant screw in security crown. The case is also secured by a unidirectional rotating bezel with stunning bronze edge detailing and bubble curved sapphire crystal glass, domed and treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

Housed within the case and hidden behind the screwed down case back decorated with a special Oris x Momotaro engraving is the classic Oris 733 automatic winding movement. Based on the Sellita SW200-1, the Swiss made calibre provides classic central hands for hours, minutes and seconds and a power reserve of 38 hours. Each of the functions are displayed elegantly on an ocean-green gradient dial detailed with ‘Light Old Radium’ Superluminova coated hour and minute hands and indexes for a subtle, vintage finish. On delivery, the timepiece will also be presented in a unique denim travel pouch.

The Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition watch will retail at £1,700 on its release next month in May, but for those that want to be one of the first to take delivery of this remarkable piece, you can pre-order in advance at Jura Watches.
