Oris Aquis Sun Wukong Limited Edition Watch Review

A refreshing change of scenery compared to Oris’ usual limited editions, the new Oris Sun Wukong watch celebrates the 60th anniversary of the classic Chinese animated film The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven. The 2,000 piece limited edition reimagines their iconic Aquis model with a colourful red and golden-tipped seconds hand and a geometric dial in honour of the Chinese cultural icon.

One of the most notable figures in Chinese mythology is Sun Wukong, originally depicted as a trickster god in Wu Cheng’en’s adventure novel Journey to the West. Over the years, the “Monkey King” has been used as inspiration for several adaptations including animations like Son Guko in Dragon Ball and as himself in the animated series Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny. He’s even been spotted in video games like League of Legends and Fortnite. For their latest release, Oris transform their Aquis model into a playful limited edition celebrating the Chinese figure of Sun Wukong and in particular one of the most famous adaptations of his story, the 1961 animation The Monkey Kind: Uproar in Heaven.

As for the Oris Aquis Sun Wukong Limited Edition, it’s design wonderfully evokes the same colours as the Monkey King as depicted in the 1961 film. The Monkey King, otherwise known as Sun Wukong in Mandarin Chinese, is a legendary mythical creature known for his supernatural powers. In the story, he acquires a red pillar with golden tips that shrinks to become a staff for fighting his enemies. The weapon is revived at the centre of the Oris Aquis Sun Wukong watch in the form of the seconds hand dressed in the same hue of red with contrasting yellow tips. To convey how fast the Monkey King spins it in battle, Oris have placed the staff on a navy blue dial detailed with flashes of pastel blue to suggest constant motion. The effect is really quite cool and creates the realistic impression of a fast-spinning staff.

Turn the Oris Aquis Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch over and further decoration appeals to fans of the Monkey King with an image of the icon and his staff beautifully engraved on the case back. The case back is also decorated with its limited edition status of 2,000 pieces. For the case, Oris opts for classic stainless steel measuring in at 41.5mm with the familiar Aquis down-turned lugs and 300 metre water resistant rating. The housing also delivers a unidirectional rotating bezel finished with a handsome ocean blue ceramic bezel, another colour paying homage to the watch’s inspiration. The Oris Aquis Sun Wukong watch is completed with a screw down crown, crown protectors and a matching stainless steel three-row link bracelet.

Hidden within the Oris Aquis Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch is the widely used Oris 733 automatic winding movement based on the trusty Sellita SW200-1 base. It’s a shame the Swiss watch manufacturer didn’t opt for one of their new in-house manufacture movements for this one, but we are still pleased with a 28,800vph frequency and 38 hour power reserve. The movement also comes with 26 jewels and powers hours, minutes, seconds and date complications.
