NOMOS Glashutte Tangente Neomatik 41 Update Watch Review

Aesthetically, it’s the epitomise of Glashutte minimalism yet mechanically, it’s a remarkable accomplishment of horological engineering. Combined, its the very reason the NOMOS Glashutte Tangente remains one of the German brand’s most emblematic pieces. Now, as part of their 2021 Watches & Wonders releases, NOMOS have transformed the Tangente with some small yet meaningful changes to bring us the new NOMOS Glashutte Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch.

Suitably named, the NOMOS Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch delivers two apprises, the first being a rich midnight blue-coloured dial and the second, a ring date complication powered by the in-house DUW-6101 automatic calibre. This isn’t the first time we’ve had a Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch with this layout; back in 2019 the complication was executed on a dark grey dial in the “ruthenium” edition. The same complication has also been spotted on the new Metro Neomatik 41 Update watch also part of the brand’s 2021 Watches & Wonders releases. This is the first time however that the 6101-powered date ring is achieved on a 41mm Tangente with a midnight blue dial.

The recognisably clean and simple design of the Tangente remains the premise of the new NOMOS Glashutte Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch. It’s angled stainless steel case measures to 41mm in diameter and only 7.8mm in height and sits effortlessly against the skin thanks to thin lugs and a Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan black strap equipped with a winged square stainless steel clasp. The lugs sit at 20mm apart making way for the characteristically simple bezel, which in truth is almost non-existent, and sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating. The Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch is also water resistant to 50 metres so it suitable only for showering.

The real star of the NOMOS Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch is its dial. Dressed in a gorgeous midnight blue colour, it instantly calls for attention with contrasting white Arabic numerals, sleek silver hands for hours and minutes and a matching blue small seconds dial at 6 o’clock. Round the circumference of the dial is where true juxtaposition takes place with the subtle cut outs making room for the two neon green markers that highlight the date. The feature is set far out around the minute markers to ensure the entire month is always in view and the green layer beneath is dressed in Superluminova so the date is legible in all lighting conditions.

Driving the patented date ring complication is the in-house NOMOS DUW-6101 automatic winding movement. The mechanism was first introduced back in 2018 as an evolution of the Neomatik movement. It delivered a new date complication that could be set both forwards and backwards with ease, remained ultra slim at 3.6mm but came in larger in diameter at 35.2mm hence the 41mm size of the NOMOS Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch. The DUW-6101 calibre is also equipped with the German brand’s legendary Swing System, a power reserve of 42 hours and a beautifully executed oscillating rotor which with its traditional Glashutte ribbing can be viewed through the sapphire crystal case back.

As with all NOMOS watches, the NOMOS Glashutte Tangente Neomatik 41 Update watch is delivered in an elegant black wallet, perfect for those that like to travel their favourite wristwatches or simply store them away safely. The piece is not a limited edition and retails at £3,200. For more information on this model and other new NOMOS 2021 watch releases, head over to the Jura Watches website here.
