Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition Watch Review

The Maurice Lacroix Aikon has always been the brand’s archetypal sports watch and for 2021, as part of the year’s Geneva Watch Days event, the Swiss manufacturer takes the urban aesthetic to a whole new level. Designed in collaboration with freerunning specialist Simon Noguiera, the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition enthusiastically embraces metropolitan landscapes of which Simon explores with a unique laser engraved case and bracelet.

Who is Simon Noguiera?

Simon Noguiera is the latest member of Maurice Lacroix’s “ML crew”, a group of athletes, artists and entrepreneurs all from different fields yet all representing the Maurice Lacroix ethos. Simon is a perfect match for the luxury watch brand’s “fail to succeed” attitude as a specialist in free running, a sport which involves running, jumping and hanging from tall city buildings secured merely by the tips of his fingers. His love for the sport came from wanting to reach and view the world from above, and is doing so, he began to climb the exteriors of buildings using only his limbs. He uses no safety net and there is no room for mistakes. Similiarly to how Maurice Lacroix engineer their watches, Simon’s timing and precision must be perfect. He also boasts an avid following on social media with over 3.5 million subscribers on TikTok and over 180 million views. As part of his new role as a member of the ML crew, he has designed the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition.

The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition

If you’ve not come across the Maurice Lacroix Aikon before, it’s worth taking a look at the collection in full here just to fully appreciate the difference between the permanent line and this extraordinary limited edition. Its contrast lies entirely within the design of the stainless steel case and integrated bracelet with according to Simon Noguiera takes inspiration from the architecture populating the world’s urban landscapes, an area where he feels most at home. The engravings also resemble Maori tattoos, a popular means of self-expression. Whatever you take from the unique motifs, they engage and reflect the light beautifully and add a truly distinctive finish to the timeless profile.

Like all Maurice Lacroix Aikon watches, the new Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition watch upholds its promise for ergonomic design with a 42mm integrated case, flat sapphire crystal glass, a practical water resistance rating and a signature 6 arm bezel. Breaking up the tattoo-like engravings, the arms of the bezel are striped just like that of the inner links of the stainless steel bracelet. The screw in crown at 3 o’clock is also left classically adorned with the Maurice Lacroix logo and delivers a water resistance of 200 metres. Beneath the sapphire crystal is a stunning sun-brushed Clous de Paris dial with luminescent markers for the hands and date window.

Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date indication and the 38 hour power reserve is the ML 115 automatic winding movement, a Swiss made calibre we’ve seen numerous times in the Aikon collection. Through the exhibition case back of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe Limited Edition, you can witness the circular graining, snailling and Côtes de Genève motif of the movement as well as a unique oscillating rotor engraving with the same patterns seen on the watch’s case and bracelet. The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe is a limited edition of 500 pieces and retails at £1,890.
