Dressed in black or beige, the display pairs with a clearer 24 hour counter, a smaller case size of 42mm and an exhibition case back to show off its Swiss automatic winding movement. The brand’s flagship model, the U-Boat Classico watch represents founder Italo Fontana’s idea of a pure, timeless design that will never fade like normal passing fashions. Each instrument is defined by a thick water resistant case, an easily legible dial and most distinguishably, a large crown placed on the left hand side of the case equipped with a statement crown guard and lever. The U-Boat Classico is, as its name suggests, a classic for a reason so very few changes deserve to be made to its design. The brand have done it just right though, offering two new U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches with some subtle but elegant improvements.
Starting with the case, the new U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches deliver a reduced case size of 42mm, with previous editions opting for larger diameters of 45mm, 47mm and 50mm. They retain their tall height (exact measurements for this are yet to be determined) and are engineered from AISI 316L stainless steel. As its name attests, the case also features polished tungsten on its bezel delivering exceptional scratch resistance and a nice change in finish to the rest of the brushed case. The U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches also promise 100 metre water resistant ratings, mineral glass on the case back sealed by six screws and scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass on top completed by a layer of anti-reflective coating.
The most notable change found in the new U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches is the display which presents in two colours, black or beige. The beige dial is found under model number 8892 and elects black Superluminova for its indexes, numerals and hands for effortless contrast. Similarly, reference 8893 pairs its black dial with juxtaposing cream-coloured Superluminova hardware. Both dials boast three layers, the hands placed on the first, the coloured base as the second and cut out elements revealing the third to distinguish the indexes and date window at 9 o’clock. The iconic ruby is also maintained at 6 o’clock. A new feature for the U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches is the layout of the 24 hour counter placed at the 4 o’clock position. This presents additional markers around its circumference for even better readability of a second time zone.
Powering the hours, minutes, seconds, date and 24 hour dial is a Swiss automatic winding movement. It promises 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 44 hours. U-Boat have equipped the movement with their own custom skeletonised rotor which can be admired through the central mineral glass window on the case back. Completing the U-Boat Classico Tungsten watches is a gorgeous, aged leather strap handmade in Tuscany. The leathers are dyed brown and lasered with a special decoration. The straps are completed by waxed cotton seams and shiny stainless steel pin buckles.
