Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition Watch Review

Alexander Shorokhoff extend their Vintage line with a new edition of their iconic Lucky 8 watch. The new Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition remains a tribute to the lucky number 8 from Chinese culture which many people attribute to fortune and good luck while also delivering a new, complex and utterly breathtaking filigree and skeletonised dial that perfectly captures the German manufacturer’s technical prowess and creativity.

It’s not very often we talk about Alexander Shorokhoff watches on Horologii, but their incredible designs are deserving of so much more attention. Alexander Shorokhoff and his team are responsible for creating some of the most unique watches on the market, remaining entirely independent in both design and production. Since many of the Alexander Shorokhov watch designs are so complex, they are not suitable for mass production and instead offer a high degree of exclusivity with most designs offered in small, limited edition numbers. The Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition watches follow suit with the four variations limited to only 50 pieces each.

Each Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition watch differs in its case material and dial colourway, remaining identical in movement , functionality, and overall aesthetic. The first variant under reference AS.V3-02-R is dressed in classic stainless steel and features a black and silver open worked dial with bright red accents. The second offers the same dial design but with a black PVD stainless steel case (AS.V3-02-BR). The last two models are our favourites, entirely for their black and rose gold plated open worked dials with bold yellow detailing. Model reference AS.V3-02-BY is dressed in black PVD stainless steel while the last model, reference AS.V3-02-GY, captivates with a full rose gold PVD stainless steel case.

The cases measure to 43.5mm in diameter and 11.5mm in height and come equipped with stunning sapphire crystal case backs, non-screw locked crowns, 50 metre water resistant ratings and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass on the front. Each colourway of the Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition is also paired with a genuine ostrich leather strap in black with yellow or red stitch detailing to match the dial and an engraved pin buckle in rose gold PVD, black PVD, or classic stainless steel.

The real talking point of the Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2 Limited Edition watches is their dials. These gorgeous works of art combine filigree features, buoyant engravings, a cut out date indicator and an 18 carat rose gold or stainless steel centre which delivers an insight into the refined automatic winding movement hiding inside. Around the very edge of the dial is the date indicator marked by even numbered Arabic numerals. A special date disk dressed in red or yellow is fixed to the movement, so the date is highlighted through one of the small 31 windows.

At the 12 o’clock position, the date is marked by a question mark, rather than the number 31, a trait common in all Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8 watches which draws on its namesake and the idea the 31st calendar day occurs exactly 7 times a year. The number 8 at 3 o’clock is also highlighted differently as is the marker at 21, two numbers believed to represent good luck. The dials continue to impress with the large central hands for hours and minutes and a seconds hand which delivers exceptional readability, despite its sleekness, thanks to its two-tone design.

At its centre, the exquisite open-worked movement immediately captures attention, decorated in rose gold PVD or left bare in stainless steel and fitted with three fixing screws that have been blued by hand. The movement on display is the 2416.Poljot Calibre, a rare movement that stopped production around 20 years ago. Despite this, Alexander Shorokhoff was able to track down a small number of the vintage calibre and reworked, lubricated, hand engraved and adjusted it at the Alexander Shorokhoff manufactory. The Alexander Shorokhoff Lucky 8-2’s limited edition status of 50 pieces was decided entirely on how many of these vintage movements they could track down.
