Laco Frankfurt GMT Watch wins Red Dot Design Award

For the first time, Laco have received the Red Dot Award for one of their latest releases: the Laco Frankfurt GMT watch. The much deserved honour for “Product Design 2020” prizes the timepiece’s outstanding design quality with its stunning dark sandblasted stainless steel case, Laco 93 automatic winding calibre and two time zone display perfect for international travellers.

To win one of the world’s most renowned design competitions is a huge honour for many watch manufacturer’s and in our opinion, Laco have deserved one for quite some time. The jury honoured the Laco Frankfurt GMT watch for its classic yet modern appearance and its characteristic design of German pilot watches, a design that the company has mastered better than a lot of other luxury brands for a number of years.

The winners of the Red Dot Award have proved that they have created excellent products worthy of winning an award. The products won over the jury not only through their aesthetic, but also thanks to their incomparable functionality. With their designs, the award winners are setting new standards in their industry. I wish to congratulate them most sincerely on their success,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot.

For those unfamiliar with the Red Dot Award, it’s an incredible celebration of designers and manufacturers across the world who have reached new heights in design and innovation. For 2020, more than 6,5000 products were entered into the competition from 60 countries across the world (+18% more compared to 2019). An international jury is carefully selected of experienced experts from different industries and disciplines to vote on the year’s best designs. The Red Dot Award is so highly respected, particularly by watch collectors, for its criteria to assess not just the aesthetics of a piece but the materials, level of craftsmanship, surface structure, ergonomics and functionality.

Other 2020 Red Dot Award Winners

Alongside Laco and their stunning Laco Frankfurt GMT, a number of other luxury watch brands were awarded the Red Dot 2020 award for design brilliance. The first of these was the Nomos Glashütte Tangente Sport neomatik 42 Date, another German-made watch with a sporty aesthetic featuring the brand’s first ever metal bracelet. It’s sports-elegance design won it the “Best of the Best” award, the highest level of honour. Another winner was the Louis Moinet Memoris Titanium which won Excellent Product Design in the Luxury Goods category for its remarkable skeletonised dial which places the chronograph complication front and centre, allowing the wearer to see the mechanism at a glance.

Meistersinger and Sinn were two other German brands to win the Red Dot Design, not only for 2020 but for several years running. The Meistersinger Astroscope watch is as breathtaking as it is unusual, displaying the weekdays as celestial bodies that go round and round in an everlasting circle of life. The Sinn 936 on the other hand boasts a more classic design, but a classic pilots design that has now won the Design prize two years in a row. The bicompax chronograph and its 43mm hardened stainless steel case, Caliber SZ05 automatic winding movement and sophisticated black calfskin leather strap is suited to professional and amateur pilots alike.
