Chronoswiss SkelTec and Opus Chronograph Limited Editions Review

Chronoswiss have launched two contemporary limited edition skeleton watches for 2020, the Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronograph and the Chronoswiss Opus Chronograph. Having already established themselves as masters of skeletonization, it comes as no surprise that these limited editions are outstanding in their aesthetics while still demonstrating the ongoing evolution of the brand’s design code.

Two new Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronograph Limited Editions mark the beginning of a fresh collection with a new proprietary movement, the calibre C.304, put on fully display thorough the mesmerising skeletonised dial. The two new Chronoswiss Opus Chronograph Limited Editions on the other hand are part of a family first released in 1995. The original Opus was a significant cornerstone in the brand’s development of skeletonization and the exceptionally complex 300-part masterpiece that you see today represents this history with traditional accents married to contemporary improvements.

Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronograph Limited Edition

Even after 250 years, the art of skeletonization remains one of the luxury watch industry’s most coveted complications and the Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronograph Limited Edition watches herald the future of skeletonization with a modern and mechanical matte-sandblasted movement at centre stage. The new C.304 handwound calibre is showcased in a way that clarity of the entire movement is possible with its three-dimensional technical structure secured on a X-shaped base surrounded by a matte black seconds ring and held in place by perimeter triangles.

I would say that the name SkelTec is kind of self-explanatory. Its exclusive 166-part manufacture movement with a power reserve of 48 hours, combines Opus’ mechanical spirit with space-age technologies. SkelTec takes artisanal, traditional skeletonising to warp speed.” – Maik Pansiera, Head of Design at Chronoswiss

The progressive design of the dial applies also to the cases of the Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronograph Limited Edition watches. Available in a choice of stainless steel with black DLC or black DLC with 18 carat rose gold, the cases are designed to reflect the fluidity of time itself with organic, free-flowing forms, sculptural curves and skeletonised lugs. Yet, despite being undisputedly modern, the limited editions still retain the design codes of all Chronoswiss models before it with the inclusion of an onion-style crown and the signature coin-edge bezel.

Limited to only 50 pieces each, the Chronoswiss SkelTec Chronographs measure to 45mm in size and feature a screw down case back with satin finish and sapphire crystal offering another view at the movement. Scratch resistant sapphire crystal treated with an anti-reflective coating is also used to protect the skeletonised dial where the C.304 calibre powers the central hands for hours, minutes and sweep chronograph seconds, small seconds, analog date, 30 minute counter and 12 hour counter. To complete the look of both Chronoswiss SkelTec Limited Editions, a black calfskin leather and textile strap is added alongside a bi-colour pin buckle.

Chronoswiss Opus Chronograph Limited Edition

Delivering a more traditional take on skeletonization, the Chronoswiss Opus Chronograph Limited Editions remain inspired by the originals released in 1995 alongside new contemporary inclusions. The mechanical clarity is achieved once again by trimming away any superfluous metal and leaving nothing but a filigree of skeletonization housed within a slender 41mm stainless steel case. The polished screw-down bezel features the iconic coin-edge detailing and curved, double coated anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass enjoys optimal legibility.

The screw down and sapphire crystal case back offers yet another view of the C.301 automatic winding movement within. The skeletonised and rhodium-plated blue rotor with Côtes de Genève decoration spins with every movement of the wrist, powering central hands for hours, minutes and sweeping chronograph seconds, small seconds, analog date, 30 minutes counter, 12 hour counter and a power reserve of approximately 46 hours.

Also limited to only 50 pieces each, there are two Chronoswiss Opus Chronograph watches to choose from, the first dressed up in a more traditional silver dial and the other providing a sporty aesthetic with bold accents of blue and orange. Both dials are engineered from solid 925 sterling silver with lacquered, curved hands bent by hand in the style of “Breguet Losange”. Both variants are finished with Louisiana alligator leather straps, the silver dialled in black and the blue and orange dialled in navy blue with orange stitch detailing.
