To celebrate the 104th birthday of the Indianapolis 500, TAG Heuer have unveiled the 2020 edition of their Formula 1 Indy 500 watch. If there is a brand with more extensive links to motorsport than TAG Heuer, we’d like to hear from them, but this Swiss watch manufacturer has been honouring the sport for as long as we can remember. This year they also celebrate 16 years as the Official Timekeeper of the NTT IndyCar Series, and as expected the 2020 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 Special Edition watch honours the longstanding partnership with a sporty, powerful, and adrenaline-filled design.
The Indianapolis 500 race is one of the oldest automobile races in the world and is a monarch for open-wheel racing in North America. The 500 mile race is held every year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana and is one of the most-attended single-day sporting events in history. Since 2004, TAG Heuer has served as the Official Timekeeper of the Indianapolis 500 and together they have offered up a fantastic selection of special edition and limited edition timepieces in their honour. Designed in collaboration with the IndyCar team, the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition watch perfectly represents both the Swiss watch brand’s and the team’s passion for the intensity, spirit and power of motor racing. Its eye-catching dial features striking red accents including a unique brick motif on the dial to honour “The Brickyard”, the nickname for the Indy racetrack. The Indy 500 logo can also be seen on the 6 o’clock subdial and on the screw down case back while the words “Indy 500” are engraved in red on the black ceramic tachymeter scale bezel.
The 43mm case continues the stealthy black aesthetic engineered from black DLC coated stainless steel with a sandblasted finish. Fitted with a screw down case back and sandblasted black DLC steel screw down crown, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 watch provides an impressive water resistance of 200 metres while the flat sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating allows for optimal legibility of the dial. The case is completed by a sporty black perforated rubber strap and a matching black DLC coated steel pin buckle, all carefully designed to fit easily and comfortably over a racing suit.
First created in 1987, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection is home to a thrilling range of sporty watches each with their own unique personality and Swiss made movements. The 2020 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 Special Edition is no exception and features a high precision Swiss quartz calibre. The movement equips the sporty black dial with central hands for hours and minutes, central chronograph seconds, a date window at 4 o’clock and three azurage-patterned subdials for small seconds, 1/10th second chronograph and hour chronograph counter.
