Seiko 5 Sports Naruto & Boruto Limited Edition Collection Review

Following on from the success of their kick-ass Street Fighter V collection, Seiko have collaborated with two of Japan’s most successful anime’s Naruto and Boruto to bring us seven new Seiko 5 Sports Naruto and Boruto Limited Edition creations. Powerful, colourful and thematic, each design is based on one of the animation’s central characters including Naruto, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Lee and Gaara from Naruto and Boruto and Sarada from Boruto.

No strangers of taking inspiration from their doorstep, Seiko have released several limited editions commemorating Japan and its culture over recent years including the already mentioned 5 Sports Street Fighter V collection, the Grand Seiko Godzilla Limited Edition and the Seiko Presage Porco Rosso. This time, the Japanese watch manufacturer takes inspiration from one of the biggest-selling manga series, Naruto which has sold almost 250 million copies worldwide and become a phenomenon on screen. The show follows the extraordinary adventures of young ninja, Naruto Uzumaki, while the spin off series, Boruto, focuses on Naruto’s son. The new Seiko 5 Sports Naruto and Boruto Limited Edition watch collection captures the personality and style of each of the main characters from the series in exceptional detail.

Before we take a look at each Seiko 5 Sports Naruto and Boruto Limited Edition watch more closely, it’s worth noting that while each variation differs in aesthetic, they all follow suit in their remarkable Seiko 5 Sports specifications. The Seiko 5 Sports collection was named as such for its five key attributes: an automatic movement, a day and date display, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o clock and a case built especially for durability. The Seiko 5 Sports Naruto and Boruto Limited Editions deliver just that with the Calibre 4R36 automatic winding movement and it’s a power reserve of 41 hours, 24 jewels and 21,600 vibrations per hour, Hardlex crystal glass, an exhibition case back, 100 metre water resistant rating and a 42.5.mm diameter case. All the variations are limited to 6,500 pieces and come delivered in a unique box inspired by the Earth and Heaven Scrolls from the Chunin exams, an examination used in the series to test the skill of a junior ninja.

Seiko 5 Sports Naruto Limited Edition Watch (SRPF70K1)

Inspired by the leading protagonist of the franchise, the Seiko 5 Sports Naruto Limited Edition SRPF70K1 watch evokes Naruto’s iconic orange Ninja outfit with an orange textile strap with a blue strap down the middle to represent the same lines on his clothing. This variation is the only one of the set to feature yellow gold colour plating on its case while its ratcheted bezel has been purposely frosted to give it a worn-out execution to symbolise Naruto’s journey of tough training and battle to become Hokage. At the 12 o’clock position, the bezel is detailed with the legendary symbol of the Leaf village, Naruto’s home.

Continuing to amaze with more series-inspired accents, the dial of the Seiko 5 Sports Naruto watch is also dressed in orange, but this time purposely styled to look like Naruto’s “Rasengan” ability often portrayed in a formidable spiral pattern. The orange design fades gently into black on the outskirts and pairs beautifully with the luminous indexes around the edge, nine of which have been decorated in orange to present the spirit of the Nine-Tails, a powerful fox spirit sealed within Naruto. The index marker at 12 has also been carefully executed to embody the shape of the pedant he inherits from Tsunade, a senior Hokage of the Leaf village. To complete the design, the case back is detailed with an image of the Uzumaki Clan’s Kamon.

Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke Limited Edition Watch (SRPF69K1)

Friend and rival of Naruto, Sasuke, is wonderfully brought to life in the Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke Limited Edition watch dressed in blue and grey just like his legendary outfit. The stainless steel case is detailed with a handsome greyed-out bezel detailed with blue ratcheting around the edge and the Hidden Leaf Village symbol at 12 o’clock, this time scratched out to symbolise his betrayal and exile. Like the Naruto limited edition, the Seiko 5 Sports Sasuke watch features a dial inspired by the character’s greatest power, this time his trademark Jutsu “Chidori” and its electrifying presence. The dial also features subtle Jutsu hand signs at the 1, 3 and 8 o’clock positions while the crown is engraved with Sasuke’s clans “Sharingan” sign and the case back is printed with the Uchiha Clan’s Kamon.

Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru Limited Edition Watch (SRPF75K1)

Long-time ally and friend of Naruto, Shikamaru and his powerful “Shadow Possession Jutsu” is wonderfully represented in the dial of the Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru Limited Edition watch with extending black lines protruding out of the centre to reflect his ability to stop enemies from moving by possessing their shadows. The grey and green aesthetic is once again inspired by the character’s outfit including a blackened stainless steel case, mesh detailing around the edge of the dial to reflect Shikamaru’s fish net shirt and rounded accents on the bezel bringing to life his earrings. The indexes are shaped in the design of his favourite Shogi game pieces while the case back of the Seiko 5 Sports Shikamaru watch is adorned with the Nara Clan’s Kamon.

Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee Limited Edition Watch (SRPF73K1)

A favourite character for many, the optimistic, confident and formidable Rock Lee is wonderfully tributed in this Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee Limited Edition watch. Its forest green design takes inspiration from Rock Lee’s legendary jumpsuit while the orange stripe on the textile strap refers to his leg warmers. Similarly, the dial is decorated in a metallic sunburst green with beige coloured luminous indexes and hands. The distressed looking bezel reflects the journey of Rock Lee throughout the series including his inability to give up reflected through the markings between 8 and 12 evoking the bandages of his arm while the rest of the surface represents “The Eight Inner Gates” of which Lee manages to open up the fifth gate to obtain the rare “Hidden Lotus”. Decorating the exhibition case back of the Seiko 5 Sports Rock Lee watch, the kanji characters for “guts” are found which are also found on his heavy ankle weights.

Seiko 5 Sports Gaara Limited Edition Watch (SRPF71K1)

From the Sand Village of Sunagakure, Gaara and his incredible sand manipulation power is portrayed within the Seiko 5 Sports Gaara Limited Edition watch. The case is uniquely treated in a sand-brown plating while the dial has a pressed pattern similarly inspired by the colour and texture of sand. The kanji character for “love” decorates the 1 o’clock position, a symbol of his lacking childhood and the seal of the One-Tailed sand demon preserved inside him. The bezel is handsomely executed in darkened grey with rose gold plating embellishing the ratcheted detailing and the scale from 12 to 3 o’clock. The inner bezel and the case back of the Seiko 5 Sports Gaara watch are both detailed with the mark of his gourd.

Seiko 5 Sports Boruto Limited Edition Watch (SRPF65K1)

The last two watches in the Seiko 5 Sports Naruto & Boruto Limited Edition collection are inspired by characters from the spin of series, Boruto, and of course the main character himself is portrayed within the Seiko 5 Sports Boruto Limited Edition watch. Similar in style to his father Naruto’s watch, Boruto’s edition features a “Rasengan” spiral-inspired dial to reflect his inherited power but this time in black to evoke his dark attire. The vivid accents of pink also found on his outfit make way onto the stripe down the strap and subtly onto the tip of the second’s hand. The index at 12 o’clock reflects the bolt seen in the animation’s logo while Leaf village symbol is found above it and the Uzumaki Clan’s Kamon printed on the case back.

Seiko 5 Sports Sarada Limited Edition Watch (SRPF67K1)

Daughter of Sasuke, Sarada and her passion for becoming Hokage is brought to life in the final watch of the set: the Seiko 5 Sports Sarada Limited Edition. The striking red aesthetic portrays her fiery personality and her inherited “Fire Style: Fire Ball Jutsu” symbolised on the red gradient dial. A single Tomoe mark replaces the 4 o’clock marker to represent her status as a young ninja still in training but one in pursuit of improving her “Sharingan”. Similiarly, the two-toned bezel reveals how she inherited both her mother and father’s characteristics with the greyed half representing Sasuke and the red representing her mother Sakura. The Uchiha Clan’s Kamon can be found on both the bezel and case back of the Seiko 5 Sports Sarada watch.
