BALL Engineer III Legend II Watch Review

We’re only into the third month of 2021, and BALL Watch Company are on route to prove it as one of their best years yet. We have seen an abundance of incredible new releases from them over the past few months, so much so that we’re struggling to keep up with reviews! But it’s also one of the reasons we admire the Swiss watch manufacture so dearly. Alongside new limited editions, they have revisited popular models and given them some contemporary tweaks granting them a familiar and iterative feel. This is exactly the case with the new BALL Engineer III Legend II watch collection.

A refined explorer’s watch, the BALL Engineer III Legend II follows in the footsteps of the original BALL Engineer Legend watch launched in 2017. Incredibly similar in size, style and functionality, the new 2021 release delivers a slightly more refined finish with sleeker indexes engineered from the brand’s famous micro gas tubes while its predecessor demanded more attention with large Arabic numerals at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. Like many BALL watches in the Swiss brand’s collections, the new limited editions of 1,000 pieces are fabricated as formidable adventurer’s instruments dressed in multi-coloured gas tube luminosity, extreme resistant technology and a COSC certified automatic winding movement at their core.

For many BALL watch collectors, the brand’s incredible micro gas tube technology is the primary pull. The BALL Engineer III Legend II watches are illuminated by 19 tritium tubes in total on each hour marker and all three hands. The multi-coloured lightshow is really something one must see in person and has become an emblem in itself for the BALL Watch Company. The tritium gas tubes deliver incomparable luminosity to any other luminous technology in the watchmaking world, shining automatically from the first sign of darkness. They do not require any recharge from the sun or any external light source and do not drain any of the power reserve. The markers are also 100 times brighter than other luminous paints commonly used in the luxury watch industry and guarantee superior brightness that lasts up to 25 years.

The micro gas tubes contrast wonderfully against two dial colourways in blue or black, both adorned with central hands for hours, minutes and seconds and a practical date window at 3 o’clock. The date is magnified by a weighty cyclops lens for instant readability. Powering each of these complications is the BALL RR1101-C automatic winding movement based on the renowned ETA 2892-A2 calibre. It’s superior engineering has been tested and certified by Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) over the course of 15 days in different positions and temperatures to achieve chronometer certification of -4 sec to +6 seconds per day. The BALL Engineer III Legend II watches also deliver an impressive power reserve of 80 hours.

On the exterior, the BALL Engineer III Legend II comes dressed in robust stainless steel measuring to 40mm in diameter and only 11.5mm in height. Its construction is nicely balanced, delivering enough complexity so that it remains essential as a piece of outdoors equipment but with a remarkably thin profile that slides nicely under dress attire. The case of each BALL Engineer III Legend II watch also boasts scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, a screw in crown and screw down case back assisting of a 100 metre water resistance. The movement is protected by a mu-metal shield which provides anti-magnetic protection to an intensity of 80,000 A/m and a patented Amortiser anti-shock system which safeguards precision by absorbing any accidental external shocks.

The BALL Engineer III Legend II is anticipated for release between June and July 2021 at a retail price of £1,890.
