Ball is no stranger to creating tough tools for important missions. The Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD is just another string to the brand’s bow. Nevertheless, is it very special.
Watches like the Engineer Hydrocarbon face adversity and risk head-on and have been designed by Ball experts to fulfil a specific role in the world. This is not unusual for Ball Watch Company – it’s what the brand does best. After all, it was Ball that pioneered the road to railway timekeeping safety back in the early 1900s – the same manufacturer that we associate with superior accuracy and reliability and the one responsible for creating high-performance chronometers. Built for adventure and with rugged specifications, the collection expands further with the EOD, oozing quality materials lug-to-lug and a look and feel that is ready for action.
The new Ball EOD watches belong to the Engineer collection – a family of watches laden with impeccable movements, robust cases and bright luminous tubes filled with tritium. Suffice to say, that all these standout features are what make Ball the rather eccentric tool watch master that we have all come to love and respect today. The series expanded this year with the introduction of the Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD, forged from tough yet lightweight titanium and imbued with a set of characteristics that make it perfect for tackling the toughest of scenarios. Let’s delve into the spec of the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD watch a little deeper to see if it really is the ultimate instrument for very scenario.
The Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD Watch
The US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was formed in 1941 as a tactical, experienced team responsible for clearing high-risk scenes and creating a safe space for others following locations where bombs or dangerous materials lie. The job role is not for everyone and requires qualities of endurance, perseverance, patience and determination in a person. The same goes for the watch they wear. Designed for every imaginable mission, including helicopter insertion, dive operations, and tactical unit expeditions – there couldn’t be a tougher, more suitable instrument than the Ball EOD. Of course, these aren’t everyday scenarios, so would someone wear a watch like the Engineer Hydrocarbon every day?
We’ve already established that clearing battlefields is not a job that anyone is tasked with. But here’s why the new Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD is ideal for daily, on-the-go, tasks. To start with, Ball Watch Company crafts the case of the new Hydrocarbon watch in titanium for a tough yet lightweight finish on the wrist. The case measures a 42mm diameter and can withstand a 10-meter fall thanks to some seriously innovative patented technology.
Ball Technology
You can pound the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD watch. You can even drop it, knock it, and put it through its paces. It’s one of the brand’s most robust mechanical watches to date, thanks to its elastomer ring, which promises remarkable shock protection. It is this elastomer ring that surrounds the dial and the mechanical movement, allowing the crown, the stem, the spring, and the dial to move while it absorbs impact. Thanks to this extra padding, less impact energy reaches the delicate internal components of the watch. Two further pieces of technology are at play inside the watch, too. Ball experts cover the balance spring with SpringLOCK® technology, which prevents coiling and twisting caused by impact. At the regulator assembly end, the SpringSEAL® technology prevents the risk of position changes caused by heavy force and movement. As a result, the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD has a shock resistance of 50,000Gs and an anti-magnetic level of 1,000 Gauss.
The new Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD watch comes in two designs, one with a black ceramic bezel and one in stainless steel. Both are utility-focused, with clear, legible markings for quick and easy timings. Ball experts top the watch with a sapphire crystal glass front, offering superior scratch resistance and anti-glare properties. In addition to this, the watches feature a special crown protection system with a protective cap engraved with the Ball emblem. This element covers the surface of the crown, protecting it from impact and moisture.
Thanks to Ball’s innovative light tube technology, the integral features of the dial illuminate beautifully in the dark. A total of 28 micro gas tubes feature throughout the design, including the hour markers, the hands and the bezel. With a 300-meter water resistance, there is no challenge the Ball Engineer watch can’t face with confidence. Its ultra-masculine, tool watch design, however, is versatile enough to be worn with daily attire and with something smarter at night. Inside the case is the Ball RR1101-CSL – a COSC-certified self-winding engine with a patented hairspring system for all-around superior mechanical efficiency.
