Seiko Prospex LX Skyline Limited Edition Watch Review

Inspired by the mystic beauty of the earth as seen from space, the new Seiko Prospex LX Skyline Limited Edition is the latest addition to the Japanese watch brand’s luxury line of LX watches. Built to higher standards than regular Prospex models, the Seiko Prospex LX line is described as the pinnacle of Seiko’s sports watches incorporating premium materials and the legendary Spring Drive movement previously limited to only Grand Seiko watches.

The Seiko Prospex LX watch collection has already become a pivotal destination for luxury sports watch wearers despite its release only last year. Delivering the same Spring Drive technology as the Grand Seiko name alongside the rugged, efficient and sporty aesthetics of the Prospex brand, the Seiko Prospex LX watches perfectly balance the line between opulence and efficiency. The collection was originally inspired by the Seiko’s first divers watch released in 1968 and takes its name from the Latin word “lux” which translates to “light”, a muse reflected in each design’s ability to shine a presence upon its wearer through a high aesthetic sense, practicability and precision. Each release has also been developed in collaboration with designer Ken Okuyama, the first non-Italian industrial engineer to design a Ferrari and an accomplished diver himself who wears a Seiko Prospex watch by choice. Through a use of high-end materials, Zaratsu polishing and the brand’s iconic Spring Drive movement, the new Seiko Prospex LX Skyline SNR049J1 watch brings in another almighty win for the collection.

Nicknamed the “Skyline”, the Seiko Prospex LX under reference SNR049J1 has been designed to reflect the mesmerising scenery of earth from space with a unique graded dial and a two-toned sapphire glass bezel. The stratosphere’s change in colour from black to blue is demonstrated on the dial from 6 to 12 o’clock while the black and blue bezel is similarly split and complemented by a 24 hour scale to pair with the GMT hand. The bezel sits high on the case, measuring to 14.7mm thick, delivering exceptional usability with ratcheted detailing and a luminous triangle marker at the 12 o’clock position.

Perfect for the avid globetrotter, the Seiko Prospex LX Skyline Limited Edition is equipped with a traditional GMT hand positioned at the centre decorated in a handsome sky blue colour. The arrow tipped hand works alongside the 24 hour scale on the bezel to display the second time zone, and as premium GMT watch, it is only the local hour hand that needs adjusting when landing in a different time zone allowing neither the minutes nor seconds to be affected. The dial is also fitted with large luminous indexes and central hour and minute hands, characteristic of the Prospex LX line, a handy date window at 3 o’clock and a power reserve indicator of 72 hours at 8 o’clock – all housed beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass.

Honouring its Latin-inspired name, the Seiko Prospex LX SNR049J1 watch is presented in a high-density titanium case polished by the brand’s legendary Zaratsu technique. The distortion-free mirror surface measures to 44.8mm in diameter and is treated with a hard coating for optimal scratch resistance. The case’s overall architecture is the same as other Seiko Prospex LX models in the collection with sleek angular lugs, a screw down crown at 4 o’clock and a three-row link titanium bracelet paired with a folding clasp with push button release. A screw down case back ensures a water resistance of 100 metres and is marked by its limited edition status out of 400 pieces.

One of the real draws of the Seiko Prospex LX collection is its accessibility to Seiko’s Spring Drive technology. Previously used in only Grand Seiko watches, the Spring Drive “hybrid” movement takes the accuracy of a quartz movement and combines it with the practicability and beauty of mechanical calibres. Using a piece of technology called the tri-synchro regulator, it allows for a supply of perpetual source of energy but with the benefits of quartz accuracy. The Calibre 5R66 in the Seiko Prospex LX Skyline Limited Edition enjoys a +/- 1 second per day accuracy and a healthy power reserve of 72 hours.
