An avid watch collector has discovered that the Seiko 6139 was the first automatic chronograph in space – confirmed by the astronaut that wore it.

David Bruno identified the space mission (Skylab 4) online and was able to track down the astronaut, Col. William Pogue.

Bruno wrote a letter to Pogue, asking about the watch he wore on the mission. He explained that it was widely believe that the Sinn model 142 was the first automatic chronograph in space, but had heard claims Pogue’s Seiko had been even earlier.

“I’ve read a transcript where you mention your ‘trusty old Seiko’ but you don’t mention the model number, whether it was an automatic … or if it was a chronograph,” Bruno wrote. He asked for any details the astronaut could recall, and included a picture of a Seiko 6139.

Pogue wrote a handwritten reply in the margin of Bruno’s letter, saying that he still had the watch in a safe deposit box. He revealed that it was automatic, had a stopwatch feature, and looked very similar to the picture Bruno had provided.

“The Seiko launched in Nov ’73 and came back with me on 8 Feb ’74,” Pogue wrote. “I used it for years in favour of my Rolex which I got in 1957-58 when I flew with the Thunderbirds.”

Pogue also sent a selection of photographs and a copy of the watch’s original sales receipt.

Col. Pogue sent a second letter that revealed he did not have permission to carry the Seiko on the misssion, but that they had not received the NASA Omega watches until late in their training: “I had been using the Seiko for well over six months (perhaps over a year) and had found it very handy for timing engine burns in the simulator … Hence, I did not make any attempt to get official permission or approval to carry the Seiko on the mission.”

Col. Pogue also confirmed that the self-winding mechanism worked fine in zero gravity, saying: “I don’t remember having to use any extra arm motions to back up the self-winding feature.”

David Bruno has shared all the documents from Col. William Pogue at http://sinn142.fateback.com/pogue.html.

Using innovative social media ideas such as live tweets and video streaming, Baume et Mercier brought SIHH closer to watch fans all over the world – and the brand’s excitement at its new models was clear.

SIHH 2012 saw Baume et Mercier unveil additions to its Hampton, Capeland and Linea collections, each of which embodies the brand’s ethos of ‘seaside living in the Hamptons’, celebrating the support of family and life’s special moments.

Hampton

Described by Baume et Mercier as the line that “most strongly embraces the brand’s inherent DNA and philosophy”, the Hampton collection blends a distinctive rectangular vintage case with architectural lines. Two new stainless steel bracelet models were revealed, to be added to the men’s line in April 2012.

The new timepieces feature a 45 x 32mm polished and satin-finished stainless steel case, ETA 2985 automatic movement and Arabic numerals.

Hampton Ref. 10047 / Hampton Ref. 10048

Capeland

Baume et Mercier’s Capeland collection is inspired by a 1948 single-push piece chronograph vintage model, featuring a classic round case. The line will be enhanced in May 2012 with the release of 13 new models. The additions retain many of the collection’s key features (Arabic numerals, tachymeter and telemeter scales, retro-styled short horns) but the brand has added a larger 44 mm case, and complementary two-tone dial colours in the core range.

The Capeland timepieces include self-winding La Joux-Perret 8120 movement, polished and satin-finished steel case, chronograph and date function.

Capeland Ref. 10068 / Capeland Ref. 10065 / Capeland Ref. 10063

Linea

Since its launch in 1987 the Baume et Mercier Linea line has been “dedicated to timeless elegance and cutting-edge style”. The 32 mm collection will be enhanced in 2012 with a new trapezoidal diamond bezel setting, and the introduction of Swiss quartz movement. The new Linea range also features a variety of diamond settings, from a subtle shimmer to an intense fully-bedecked diamond case.

The 2012 Linea watches include an interchangeable bracelet, offering the opportunity to replace the polished and satin-finished stainless steel bracelet with a black or brown satin strap.

Functions, style, size, brand and budget are just a few factors to consider before investing in a luxury or designer watch. With so many timepieces to think about, basic decisions on which material to choose can become overwhelming.

Recent reports show a rising popularity in both titanium and gold timepieces, so we’ve looked at the benefits of each material. Which do you prefer: robust titanium, or elegant gold?

Titanium

The properties of titanium are not as widely known to buyers as other materials used in watchmaking, but a number of manufacturers are putting its benefits to good use – a recent feature by WatchPro suggests that titanium watches have gone from “niche novelties to some of the bestsellers for UK watch retailers.” A more affordable option than steel or gold, titanium is lightweight but very strong – which is perfect for oversize models, such as U-Boat watches, or those with many complications. Using titanium allows sportier brands like Citizen and Tissot to lower the overall weight of the timepieces.

Emma Field of U-Boat‘s UK distributor Rockwell told WatchPro that the brand’s use of the titanium is “largely due to the weight factor, but also the versatility of the metal, which includes its durability and strength compared to other light metals such as aluminium.”

U-Boat U-42 Black / Tissot T-Touch II Titanium / Oris Divers Titan Small Second Date Diamond / Sinn Ladies Watch

Gold

While titanium is making waves in the watch industry, reports show that the demand for a classic gold watch is still very high.

It’s no secret that the recession has impacted sales of gold jewellery but – perhaps surprisingly – gold watches have not suffered in the same way, with figures showing a marked increase in popularity. WatchPro quotes Swiss watch export figures that show a 30% uplift in the number of gold watches being sent out, accounting for half the total 19.2% increase on total export growth in October 2011.

Watchmakers have used gold since the earliest development of timepieces, as it was discovered that a gold case complemented the quality of movement. Gold is long-lasting and resists tarnishing, and over time has remained to be a symbol of luxury. While some consumers may have moved away from the obvious extravagance, many others still remain faithful to the elegance of gold.

Zahra Kassim-Lakha, UK brand director and head of global strategy at Jaeger-LeCoultre told WatchPro that sales of gold watches are still very strong, saying: “In these times of austerity, wearing a timepiece that exudes real value, heritage and timelessness is essential.”

Tutima Classic Flieger Chronograph / Perrelet Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Pink Gold / Perrelet Diamond Flower / Philip Stein Date

Just over a month has passed since the third annual SalonQP exhibition, and watch enthusiasts are still reflecting on its incredible success.

As the only event of its kind in the UK, SalonQP has firmly established itself as an unmissable showcase for fans and collectors of luxury watches. The Prodigal Guide described it as “charming, accessible and unpretentious”; just one example of the high praise recorded across newspapers, blogs and social networks following the November event.

And if statistics speak louder than praise, SalonQP still has much to celebrate. The 2011 event more than tripled its number of visitors, with 5,000 people in attendance across the three-day event – significantly more than the 1,600 visitors in 2010.

It has been suggested that the increased interest was due to the change in venue. This year saw a move to the Saatchi Gallery; an impressive setting much larger than that of the two previous events. It allowed 42 brands to showcase their collections (11 more than last year) so visitors could view more of their favourite timepieces up close.

Watch blogger Watch Nerd wrote: “In my opinion, it was phenomenally successful, capturing the spirit of QP in an environment (the Saatchi Gallery in London’s Chelsea) that seemed to breathe life into everything on display.”

The extra space at the Saatchi Gallery was also used for a number of ‘interactive features’, including the chance to take part in a watchmaking masterclass with Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie exhibition on the history of watchmaking.

Many luxury brands used SalonQP as an opportunity to unveil new models: Graham revealed its Swordfish Iris, while Bell & Ross presented the WW1 timepiece. Most notably, however, was Ronnie Wood’s announcement of his collaboration with Bremont, revealing the first in his collection of bespoke hand-painted clocks.

SalonQP gives watch lovers a chance to view rare timepieces, preview latest models and meet the people behind the luxury brands, without any pressure to purchase. Professional Jeweller reported that many of the exhibitors are already confirming their participation for next year, and a number of new brands interested in joining them – suggesting the popularity of SalonQP will continue to grow in 2012.

It may well be a few years since you experienced that joyful anticipation, but Baume et Mercier is getting us back in the habit.

The luxury watch brand has given the traditional seasonal countdown a modern twist. While most advent calendars contain a festive image and a piece of chocolate, Baume et Mercier has taken a digital route and created their own calendar on Facebook.

Finding gifts for everyone can be tricky – and what do you buy for the person that has everything? Gifts and gadgets are lit up in every shop window inviting you to part with your cash, but you’re looking for something special…

If you’re feeling under pressure to find the perfect present, don’t overlook a timeless classic: a watch.

A watch is a thoughtful, practical gift for both men and women. Choose a luxury brand and invest in a present that lasts a lifetime; something the wearer will become more attached to with every passing year. It’s a gift with the potential to become a family heirloom, passed down through generations with increasing sentimental value.

If you’re on a tighter budget, there are still plenty of timepieces your family and friends will love. Consider their personal style: would they prefer casual or formal? Sporty or elegant? The perfect watch is used on a daily basis, so find the right timepiece and your gift will be cherished for many years to come.

Clothing may be out of fashion a year from now, and a gadget may be pushed aside in favour of new technologies. But a watch has a timeless quality that will not look dated by the time next Christmas is upon us. Few gifts are equally stylish and useful with the potential for lifelong wear… so here are a few suggestions to start your search.

Nine special guests attended the watchmaking experience, where they were guided through the disassembly of a manual wound watch movement and then taught how to reassemble it to a working standard. IWC had sent one of their master watchmakers, Christian, to offer his expertise and guidance.

The guests sat at workstations that held all the necessary tools, and they carefully worked through Christian’s step-by-step instructions. Each stage of the disassembly and reassembly was clearly explained, and the guests could complete the task in their own time.

With the movements fully reassembled, the guests were served drinks and canapés to celebrate their achievement. They discussed their experience with the IWC representatives, agreeing that they had gained a better understanding of the skills and knowledge needed for watchmaking.

The experience allowed the guests to fully appreciate the complexities of creating luxury timepieces to such a high standard, and the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.

George became master of the Clockmaker’s company in 1722 and he produced nearly 3,000 watches before his death in 1751. His ‘curious’ inventions are the inspiration behind every watch the brand has and will ever make.

Graham Watches, as a brand, has grown in stature since its first creation, by making everything from high-quality Tourbillons to simplistic three-handed models and pretty much anything in-between. Graham has also developed high-profile partnerships with other top manufacturers and events such as Mercedes, RBS 6 Nations Rugby and The Isle Of Man Tourist Trophy, all of which makes the Graham name globally recognised.

The whole collection is split into three main family groups:

• Chronofighter: With its distinctive trigger over the crown itself, the watch was originally designed for pilots, to enable them to operate a chronograph in flight without having to remove any gloves. Also, by putting the crown on the left side it meant they could be built as large as required as it would never dig into the hand during movement.

•	Swordfish: A model that takes inspiration from the fish itself, with its magnified discs on the glass to help see the smallest of detail. Whether you have a chronograph model or the alarm with GMT, the feature gives the watch a clean dial with powerful lines.

•	Silverstone: A model built to incorporate key features of motorsport, whether it is specific team colours, creating pushers to resemble pedals from the car or even making dials out of carbon fibre to replicate to bodywork.

The whole point of Graham is to take George’s original vision and bring it into the present and to keep his memory alive through timeless designs.

During the 1880s Havana enjoyed a height of success where affluent travellers from all over the world would visit to enjoy the slow-paced way of life and celebrate the finer things in life.

Whilst commodities such as Cuban cigars and white rum where doing very well, the demand for timepieces bearing the Cuervo family name became insatiable. It wasn’t long before well-known watch companies such as Rolex , Vacheron and Longines were producing watches exclusively for sale in Don Ramon’s shops, with each timepiece bearing the Cuervo y Sobrinos name. Don Ramon’s work was continued notably by his nephew Don Armando. With an atelier in La Chaux-de-Fonds and with the expansion of their outlets to Germany and North America, business was good for the growing family business.

‘Cuervo Y Sobrinos’ translates as ’Cuervo and nephews’, as the skills and passion for the trade was passed down through the generations of the family. Influential figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Clark Gable and Winston Churchill had been patrons for the brand. Even Albert Einstein felt the Cuban watch company was the intelligent choice.

Taking the time to appreciate the finer things in life and to reflect became an important part of Cuba‘s culture in this era. However things came to an abrupt halt when the Cuban Revolution took hold of Havana in 1953. The Cuervo family had to flee their shop, only with what they could carry, leaving the jewellery shop with its locked steel vaults to remain untouched for the next 40 years.

Today that history is being brought back to life. In 1997 Italian entrepreneur Marzio Villa first gained access to the original shop on San Rafael Street, Havana. The brand has since been resurrected with re-issues of the original watches being manufactured in Switzerland and then sold around the world.

Various documentation and antique movements found in the vaults of the ‘La Casa’ shop in Avenida Quinta provided the basis for regeneration of Cuervo y Sobrinos watches. As a collector with a passion for fine watches and luxury sports cars, Marzio was on vacation in Cuba when he first came across these mysterious antique watches. Inevitably his curiosity led him to research the brand’s history and restore its place on the international watch scene today.

When you hold a Cuervo y Sobrinos watch it reminds you of years gone by, where time was enjoyed not just measured. The art deco contours and Latin styling cues allow you to feel the history of the brand, whilst the next chapters of the company’s history are still be written to this day. You can even visit the new boutique now open in Havana today.

By way of example the featured watch here is the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Semenal. The purpose of this watch is to instantly show the time, date, day, week and month at a glance This timepiece is considered to be a complication piece, aimed at serious collectors who would appreciate an annual calendar in an easy-to-read display.

The movement is CYS 2853 – a heavily modified ETA module which is no longer recognisable due to the sheer amount of customisation required to configure it to the functionality of the watch. A new feature to the collection is the use of a ‘full’ rotor, used to wind the watch. Where normal rotors are a half moon shape, the full rotor has a peripheral edge that forms the other half.

The meticulously decorated bridges are housed in a 45mm stainless steel case, with its unique angular oversized shoulders, giving the watch a truly Latin appearance. The dial bearing the family business’s crest is available in ivory and black options.

Should this watch be overly complicated for the user, both a three hand piece and a chronograph version are available as alternatives in a variety of options. All these watches are available to purchase through Jura Watches.
