When the Aquis Depth Gauge was revealed in the line-up of new Oris watches for 2013, it was hailed by the international press as one of the most innovative diving watches of the century. Its pioneering depth gauge function, developed and patented by Oris, made it the first mechanical watch to measure depth without any moving parts.
Oris has now announced that a new version of this critically acclaimed watch will be released in 2015.
The second version of the Oris Aquis Depth Gauge has a new blackened case and a yellow rubber strap, as well as two additional ground-breaking innovations: a safety anchor that prevents the strap from breaking loose, even after a heavy impact; and a sliding sledge clasp, which allows the wearer to adjust the size of the strap without undoing the clasp.
This updated model, with its sporty black DLC finish, is sure to follow the success of the original timepiece. One of the most innovative Oris watches to date, the Aquis Depth Gauge features an inlet at 12 o’clock, which leads into a channel milled into the outside edge of the crystal. The inlet allows water to enter the channel, creating a watermark that corresponds to depth gauge indications – giving the wearer a clear readout of their depth to 100 metres.
Oris used Boyle-Mariotte’s Law to help design the Aquis Depth Gauge. The law states that ‘pressure x volume = constant’ – which means that as a diver wearing the watch descends into deep water, pressure builds and the volume of air within the channel is compressed, allowing water to enter the watch through the inlet. Gaskets between the crystal and the case ensure that the watch is still water resistant to 500 metres.
The new Aquis Depth Gauge and many other exciting new Oris watches will become available at Jura Watches in 2015.
