For anyone who is not a keen football fan, summer (or winter if you are reading our blog in the southern hemisphere) 2010 is probably going to be a trying time. Yes, it is football World Cup year, and in just under five months the national football teams will be going head-to-head for one of the most coveted of all football trophies.
And, the great world of timekeeping is certainly not going to be left on the sidelines. Just unveiled at the 20th Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie are the Parmigiani watches specifically designed with the World Cup in mind. Parmigiani’s Captains’ Watch is a tribute to the spirit of sportsmanship.
The captains of thirteen countries’s football teams will have the once-in-a-life-time honour of designing their perfect 18 carat white old Pershing chronograph – ten of which will be produced as limited editions. The thirteen countries that have been chosen are Brazil, Argentina, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, and the United States.
A percentage of the profit from each Pershing chronograph will be donated to a charitable cause selected by each captain. Parmigiani has already produced three of the thirteen watches: the Pershing Chronographs designed by Fabio Cannavaro, the Italian captain (pictured here), by John Terry, the English captain and by Carlos Bocanegra, captain of the United States team.
